Sheffield Wednesday U21 defeat Swansea City U21 15:50 - Aug 8 with 393 viewsKeithHaynes

2-1.

From the OS.

Swansea City Under-21s fell to defeat in their first game of the Professional Development League season against 10-man Sheffield Wednesday.

The Swans had trailed to an early Luke Cook strike at the interval, although the hosts had seen Murtada Al-Jahadhmy dismissed just before the break after receiving a second yellow card.

The Swans levelled through Josh Thomas within four minutes of the restart and looked on course for at least a share of the spoils at Stocksbridge.

However, the Owls overcame their numerical disadvantage as David Agbontohoma netted what turned out to be the winner with just four minutes remaining.

The Swans hade made a dominant start in south Yorkshire, with Thomas just unable to turn home a Zane Myers’ cross, before the hosts took the lead with their first real chance.

Al-Jahadhmy got in behind the visiting defence and squared for debutant Cook to shrug off his marker and slot home.

Swansea responded well, Tarrelle Whittaker and Thomas going close but being denied by Pierce Charles in the Wednesday goal.

Remy Mitchell denied Cook a second at the other end before the hosts were reduced to 10 as Al-Jahadhmy picked up a second booking and saw red for a foul on Whittaker.

Swansea took advantage within minutes of the restart, Thomas racing onto a fine pass from Filip Lissah and slotting the ball beyond Charles to level the scores.

The visitors kept pushing, Whittaker forcing Charles into yet another save before the Swans had a goal chalked off for offside.

Josh Carey was unable to convert a great chance as time ticked down, and the hosts made Swansea pay for failing to take their chances as Agbontohoma dispatched a fine strike into the net from a Jay Glover cross.

Josh Thomas is back and seems to be getting a lot of chances to score. I am sure he will be banging them in later in the season once he gets his eye in and practices penalties.

Wise sage since Toshack era

The coach of the u21 was listed as Matthew Layton. Perhaps he has been promoted from within. Previously listed as an academy coach at u16 level.
