Martin steps up but he see’s a huge gulf in squads after 2-1 home loss. 3rd Jan 2023 08:00
Whether Russell Martin thinks so or not going 2-0 down after twenty odd minutes didn’t help the swans cause at all in a noisy and boisterous Swansea.com stadium. Even the quick fire response from Ollie Cooper left more anguish than hope as a much improved home side paid for defensive errors yet again. 0

Pretty accurate assessment on where we are and how we looked yesterday against the best team in the league. I would however question on whether RM has finally stepped up and demonstrated that he has learnt how to set up our best formation with the resources available.

Just about everyone now agrees that playing a flat back 4 should be the way ahead for the rest of the season. Will RM adopt this as the basis going forward, who knows we have been here before? What he should have learnt is that Darling is the best ball player out of our central defenders and therefore should be the first central defender on the team list. We know that Wood & Cabango are decent enough defenders but look very uncomfortable playing the ball out of defence when under pressure. Playing Latibeaudiere in a back 4 certainly hides his limitations as a wing back and hopefully that ridiculous experiment is over for now. Just stop the farcical and pointless goal kick routine and maybe just maybe we can agree that we are progressing and the coach is stepping up.

Substitutions - RM rolled the dice yesterday and lost. Taking Allen & Fulton off killed any ability that we had of getting the ball back & moving the ball forward. That, along with Burnley’s press finished us off yesterday. It was a bold move but just didn’t work, it took way too long for Cundle, Congreve & Ntcham to get in to the game, always seems to be the way when making simultaneous multiple substitutions. As well as Joey played yesterday I don’t see why he didn’t shoot yesterday when he advanced in to their box, one pass too many a regular theme with this squad. I wonder if RM shouted out ‘don’t shoot’ when the deflected shot that lead to our goal, as he did when Fulton struck the winner against Reading a while back.

Loan players - having the right quality loan players makes all the difference as proven by Maatsen yesterday. Why bring in loan players if they are not the right quality and the coach is reluctant to use them

Obafemi & Paterson - if there ever was a day when we needed them at their best yesterday could well have been the day even from the bench. The fact that they were not available suggests enough is enough. Ship them out asap please

Light at the end of the tunnel ? There seems to be increased optimism but we have been here before too many times with this coach. One win in 8 or 9 or whatever, not good enough. RM show us that you are capable of learning and stepping up

Our squad would look a lot stronger if we hadn't just had two loan players recalled for being largely ignored, or senior pros sitting on the naughty step for no apparent reason.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Teams that play allow us to play.
In the away game the score could / should have been much closer.
Watford came to play, we were given time and the ball hit the net at a higher percentage than it did in Reading given the same number chances.
Burnley came to play and that created space.
But hey ho! Once again we see a better performance as a sign Martin has everything under control and promotion awaits.

Poll: Should the summer transfer window close before the season starts?
