Smart motorways scrapped 19:26 - Apr 18 with 2412 viewsbuilthjack

Despite spending £2 billions since 2010. What a waste.

Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

The speed limit on all English motorways is 70mph which is the national UK Speed limit. Some motorways have variable speed limits which are changed where there is a high level of congestion or bad weather conditions.

Nowhere in England, to my knowledge has a permanent 50mph limit unlike large parts of the M4 in Wales.

Variable speed limits -50mph- have been on many English motorways for donkeys years. They may as well call them.permanent.

The first smart motorways was opened in 2006

Research suggest that accidents and deaths per mile on Smart motorways are less than on conventional motorways.

Over 100 people per year are killed or injured on the hard shoulder of conventional motorways usually due to vehicle staying onto the hard shoulder and hitting stationary vehicles.

The question is do more refugee areas need to be built on smart motorways as the refuge areas are safer than the hard shoulder on normal motorways as they are usually built into embankments and off protection from vehicles wandering from lane one.

Another question that has to be asked is why do so many vehicles stray onto the hard shoulder. Usually due to drivers falling asleep, playing with mobiles or other devices or just bad driving.

Modern vehicles now have aids that give warnings if the driver strays from lanes and slow down automatically if you get to close to the vehicle in front and will automatically stop if lane blocked.

It was true that initially deaths on Smart motorways were lower than what we’d term “normal”motorways. Information supplied by the Department of Transport to the Commons Transport Select Committee showed that in 2015,2016,2017 Smart motorways had lower rates of accidents and deaths, but in 2018 and 2019 Smart motorways had higher death rates.

It’s important to note there are a number of different types of motorway, Controlled Smart Motorway where the speeds are controlled by cameras etc, All Lane Running Smart motorways and normal motorways. The accident rates on the Controlled Smart Motorway and normal motorways are very similar, in 2020 (most recent published figures) the incident rates on these motorways was around 50% of the incident rate on the All Lane Running Smart motorways, which form the largest proportion of Smart motorways in England and Wales.

Totally agree with the points you make about poor driving standards, phon use etc.

Once again driving to Bristol yesterday the M4 stretch Brynglass Tunnel never disappoints! Whatever your politics, having funding and doing f all to improve the congestion was a huge mistake.

Totally agree with you about the Brynglas tunnels, I drive through there at least a couple of times a month and it’s a nightmare. Last Sunday I got caught in jams on the way up and the way back. I was tamping.

It’s a shocking state of affairs, completely unacceptable.

It was 2.30pm in the afternoon. Congestion on both sides. No other hold ups whats so ever. It was a huge opportunity now missed unfortunately.
