Just sharing a few thoughts on this grim ,grey day. Nothing ,for me, stones the soul like a national anthem. They make us reflect on youth ,family and country. It’s why grown men cry singing them. I do. Having a Germanic mother tongue ,I can get by with German and Dutch anthems ( first verse only),the French obviously and Fratelli Italia, basically a dogs breakfast that repeats .
I’ve been trying the SA one and admit defeat at the first stanza of Xhosa. The third in Afrikaans is basically pigeon Dutch and sounds rather Nazi ,to me. Tomorrow, I shall be giving it another go ,given our English cousins will be balling out GSTK out of tune, with cretinous timbre and out of time . They make it sound like a Morning Assembly in a leading Public School.
Stirring anthems and songs can really add to a tournaments atmosphere, but at the end of the day it’s what goes on the pitch that’s the bread and butter decider.
The same applies for a catchy rousing tournament supporter song like 'Yma o hyd' or 'Three lions (footballs coming home)'. They do not not win tournaments.
And neither do these songs improve reality, despite all the defiance e.g. Yma o hyd... Wales is still in a dire economic state now matter how loud and defiantly its sung….. and a rousing song like 'Rule Britannia' distorts reality also, because how much of a Royal Navy is left to rule the waves anyhow?

True enough Siggy but for a few minutes anthems give us a break from reality If anthems sung win tournaments, Wales would be pre eminent .
La Marsellaise is a thing of beauty. Love it!!! Its an anthem everyone can sing. Dur de dur dur dur ....dur dur dur der. Etc etc. Flower of Scotland a good old/new folk song sung by perennial losers. Better than ' We're all off with Alies Army'. Really bugged me that SA and the AB's who think and probably right that Southern Hemisphere teams are better than the North. Believe me if you think England are arrogant those two are even worse but they do have an incredible record.

Think Afrikaners tend to be naturally arrogant. Quite why with their record of apartheid beats me. Kiwis I find respectfuland humble, outside rugby. The English rugby set up is delusionally arrogant .
That said, we could do with a little swank ourselves
