Swansea City : The hideous blancmange play off proposal 20th Feb 2026 10:42
We know that many of you have enjoyed the excellent writing from our new team this past few months, today Rhys Clayton looks at the play off proposals with an in-depth Indy view. It will most certainly split the thinking on this proposal. 1

I'm all for the extra places. It gives more of the teams a chance.
In this division 8th place is still attainable for most clubs right up to the end.
A team can be in 18th with 5 games to go and still be in touching distance of 8th.
It would make it a much more exciting league

Against.

You may as well just give every team a lottery ticket and do away with the league.

A cautious 'for' having not spent ages thinking about it.

The article says imagine if your team in 3rd missed out and the team in 8th went up. The same thing (not quite so bad but same logic) applies now with 3rd and 6th.

And certainly this season it could be argued that quality wise there's not a great deal of difference between 3rd and 8th.

Personally I would prefer a more radical system.

Bottom 2 in the Premier League go down and top 2 in the Championship promoted automatically.

18th in the Premier League play 3rd in the Championship. 17th in the Premier League play 4th in the Championship both one off matches at Wembley with the winners playing in the Premier League the following season. You could end up with 2,3 or even 4 promoted.
