Not really into cars so thought id ask the question here.
My old aygo with 250,700.00 miles on the clock needs to be replaced.
Not looking to buy brand new as i dont see the point.
I have a 75 mile round trip for work, dont want anything big. Wife and i been discussing whether to go electric or not.

I switched from petrol to petrol hybrid the last time and am averaging around 50mpg just for my usual city driving. The prospect of arsing around trying to find a charging point puts me off electric. |  |

I have electric but doing low mileage 8000 mile a year.
I’d recommend for low mileage use I also have solar panels at home so it worth if for me. |  | | |

If you can afford it definitely go for electric or if not a plug in hybrid. And get the charger installation done at your home if you can. The Chinese manufactured cars are excellent and really good value for money.
It’ll cost you around 2p a mile to charge when you set it to charge between midnight and 7.00am. That is incredibly cheap motoring especially when compared to petrol and diesel costs. Don’t but a dispel car under any circumstances.
There is a tax coming in 2028 but it’s minimal when compared to savings on fuel which will be around £1700 to £2000 a year. | |

Solid state batteries are starting to appear in the market in China. If possible I'd hold off the current generation of batteries, they will become obsolete quite quickly.

I have a Skoda Enyaq VRS coupe
Biggest issue is true wear
It’s very fast and heavy
If you’re doing mainly urban and are with Octopus it’s very good
Long long trips means planning
Eg Trip to Swansea for me 180 miles is on one full charge
Trip to Devon means top up for twenty mins in Bristol area

I’ve just gone electric and it’s so smooth like car is floating (not in a milk float kind of way)
If you can charge from home then even better
There are some great lease deals out there if you search for them not pcp. With the evolution of battery technology it’s not worth being stuck with something you won’t be able to sell because people will want cars with the latest battery technology that will charge in minutes to full not 30 minutes or whatever it is.
Test drive sis the best option to get a real feel of it. | |

Due to my trusty old diesel breaking down, I’ve just had to go out and get a new car. I wasn’t ready to go full electric, so ended up buying a second hand petrol hybrid which has a 2.5 petrol engine and a battery capable of covering 35 miles on a full charge.
As things happened so quickly, I’ve not had a chance to have an EV charger fitted and all my journeys are mainly taking place using the petrol engine and regenerative electricity from the engine, but I’ve been really impressed. A couple of journeys have returned mpg’s in the high 30s, but most of them are in the high 50s. I’ll be getting the charger fitted next week and I’m looking forward to a lot of my regular journeys being electric.
If I was buying a second car for the wife who mainly does short journeys and local miles, I’d defo look to buying a used electric car. I’d probably look at one of the cars in the below articles.
For example the Nissan Leaf is a well built car, same size as a Golf or Focus and has an 8 year warranty on the battery. Yes, it loses a shed full of cash in depreciation in the first 3 years and yes the battery range on the lower power battery isn’t great, but if you're just travelling short distances, can recharge at home and don’t need it for long distances it’s not a bad shout.
Buying after 3 years means someone else has taken a huge hit £20k on the depreciation meaning you can get a good deal as long as you can live with the car’s limitations. May be worth a punt if it works for you.

An electric car certainly makes sense if all your miles are fairly local. Trying to convince Mrs. Winston to go electric for her next one as she rarely drives more than 20 miles at a time and can usually park outside her house.
The solid state battery stuff is what will finally tempt me into doing so I think. If I can charge from 0-90 in the same time as filling a tank then that's just as good. I don't often do more than 100 miles in a day but when I do I want to do it as easily as I can now. I like driving with the heater on when it's cold. I like driving with music. I don't want to find that the 300 miles of range I thought I had is now only 180. | |

From this point I think new electric cars will hold their value much more but second hand values of cars with the current batteries will collapse because nobody will want them. Im changing one of the cars shortly and will continue with petrol this time, hopefully when I change the other in 2 years the battery situation will have progressed. There’s plenty of choice out there as I’m finding out, I’ve always been fortunate that I can do many jobs on a car but I’m getting to the stage that clambering under a car doesn’t really appeal to me anymore so my my next car will be brand new hopefully with a long manufactures warranty , cheapish to run and one to see me out . | |

When my first car packed in the mechanic I asked for advice recommended anything East Asian. Have owned a Kia Picanto, a Hyundai Kona and a Suzuki Vitara (my favourite) since then. No problems with any of them. [Post edited 23 Apr 22:47]

I bought a used Toyota, 12 months old, 2,000 miles on the clock and saved £11k off its list price. Mate of mine had an even better deal buying a dealership managers Merc.
