The rules have changed and there is now a specific rule covering this. Since 2019, rule 127 has been in place, which expressly prohibits any club from observing, or attempting to observe, another club's training session within 72 hours of a scheduled match. Southampton have been charged with breaching both rules 3.4 and 127. A exclusion from the play offs is very possible.

As it should be. They cheated, end of debate.

This is different though so much so that specific rules were introduced to prevent it happening after the Leeds Spygate fiasco. It’s really underhand, much more so than the on the pitch incidents you mention. None of it is right though and I’d like to see more stringent rules applied on the pitch to cut out certain aspects that have crept into the game.

| Championship play off final on 12:46 - May 13 with 11078 views | Demitrius | My gut feeling is that Southampton will be booted out of the final and it will be Boro v Hull . No point having a rule if you aren't going to enforce it and the EFL loves flexing its muscles plus they will look to make an example of them to discourage others in future. | |

That would surprise me Dem,but in a good way ,not least for fact they kicked the shite out of us and Manning and Wood were not favourites of mine

They waived the future 15 point penalty to Sheffield Wednesday but got a backlash from a lot of league clubs, apparently docking them 18 points and effectively relegating them wasn't enough they wanted them hammered again next season... Most fans would say that they have suffered enough but I guess chairmen are more hard nosed... If they let Soton off lightly they may get another broadside being seen to be weak... I dunno...we'll see

What concerns me is that the EFL may make it easy for themselves and impose a fine. Southampton will not take expulsion without a fight meaning an appeal. There’s little time for this given the date of the final. As it is Boro don’t know what is happening and presumably need to keep training just in case??

| Championship play off final on 15:54 - May 13 with 10889 views | Whiterockin | Some interesting points here. Including it will not be the EFL deciding on the punishment. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/fo I've got a feeling they will be thrown out and replaced by Middlesbrough at short notice, which could lead to a counter claim from Middlesbrough if they lose to Hull because the had less time to prepare. This is going to rumble on. | | | |

I would like to think you are right but I cant see it i think it will be a fine and a points deduction if they dont win the final for next season or when they are in the efl next

With the winners prize money being reported to be £220 million should Southampton go on to win it what amount of fine would they get? And as you say a points deduction won't happen until they get relegated back to the championship.

They would take a five million fine now.

| Championship play off final on 10:34 - May 14 with 10439 views | RodgerTheDodger | Thinking about this, I would guess that an important factor in the Panel's decision will be the risk of litigation. If they chuck Soton out of the final I can see two dangers (there are probably others), 1. Soton will certainly go to CAS and it will not be heard before the final, so if the EFL lose that will be a very expensive case to lose. The problem is that Soton only have find one mistake in how it was handled, one error, and they can win on a technicality. And win several millions I suspect. 2. Millwall will of course argue that if Middlesborough get a Bye, so should they. Well they've got no obvious case, none. But again, they only have to find one obscure clause in the rules that no one has thought about (I have no idea what that might be) and again they might win a lot of money. So my guess is the Panel will play safe and go for a swingeing fine and/or a hefty points deduction. Easy to justify, "We shouldn't overrule events on the pitch". I rather agree, retrospectively changing the result of matches is a very slippery slope. OTOH, Soton are connected, so it might be "It clearly didn't affect the game" and a slap on the wrist. What amazes me is how clumsy Soton were. Anyone connected with surveillance could have got them full footage with no risk whatsoever. They could even have watched it remotely and controlled the camera. | | | |

Have they now? That's very interesting. Thank you. But it is quite possible that Soton in no way approved this or helped him do it. If he's an Intern then presumably he's not paid, and so not an employee of the club, not a member of the club in a way that makes them responsible for his actions. If all that is true, it's a very solid defence. Especially if they get rid of him when they've completed their investigation.

He is employed apparently in relation to employment law. We have a great journalist source down there. The club will no doubt work it to blame him acting alone without their permission, just a guess. But of course GPDR access could scupper that. If it comes to it i would imagine the EFL will ask for telephone access to this lads phone and potentially others. I can’t believe he just jumped in his car or there’s another point, has he got a car or a licence to drive ? Train tickets ? Who booked them etc. Edit : If the club do blame this kid and the EFL prove otherwise then their punishment will almost certainly be far more.

That would explain why it's taking time to do their investigation if they can't just straight wash their hands of him. The trouble is: everyone will be lying, and anyone who was involved won't be admitting it. So getting a solid truthful account of events will be difficult. These investigations in a company when the pointy fingers are flying are very hard to get right. People lying? In a football club? It does happen.
