My son now in his late twenties is a case study in how the jobs market used to work for many.
First job washing up in pub - cash in hand £3 an hour, got to wait on tables after a while.
Second job zero hours contract in parcel delivery firm
Third job zero hours job on helpline
Fourth job first level help desk agent zero hours,, given full time job, promoted to second level help and then technical support and issue resolution.
Fifth job cyber trainee senior security consultant, promoted to security consultant.
Now system security governance assurance manager paid £90,000 plus bonus.
He spent the first five years earning bugger all, he's 9 out of 10 dyslexic but a smart cookie who is able to process and retain complex information in particular data really quickly without getting a poor job answering the phone on a helpline he would not have started to find his way through. That's a fantastic story Jackmanand boy.
My eldest was born with nerve damage in both ears, he's worn hearing aids since he was 4, did reasonably well in school, them went to Cardiff met doing a foundation course/certificate etc, then Swansea uni,and worked in Tesco Llansamlet part-time got his degrees, then got a job up near London lived there for 3,1/2 years got promoted to Team Leader then got invited to apply for a position in Cardiff and doing well there, he's 33 in July but I'm not sure as to what's next for him, but he's happy moment. | | | |

Hospitality has always been the mainstay of youth employment and youngsters getting their foot on the ladder. This sector is really struggling hence the number of offers I get sent to me 40% off ect ect. To tackle youth employment the government needs to get this sector moving, possibly by dropping VAT to 15% in this area, long term there will be a tax return and it will help kick-start youth employment. Although very busy this week McDonald's is not doing the physical numbers it was 18 months ago. | | | |

As always, the two biggest problems have their roots in the Blair era. The insane drive to push as many kids as possible towards a University education at the cost of technical training, and the beginnings of mass migration.
You read through the stories doing the rounds on this and it's not surprising how many of the youngsters who can't find work have undertaken some sort of higher education first. Getting themselves into debt for a degree made worthless by the number of people who have them. They're pushed out of the jobs market by people with more actual experience, often fairly recent arrivals in the UK.
I wouldn't underestimate Covid and the brutal and largely unnecessary lockdowns as a factor either. A lot of children of school leaving age got used to not leaving the house, not working, not socialising, not doing anything. It's led to a huge explosion in mental health issues which I see on a regular basis. We've got a real battle with many of them just to come to an interview with us, never mind hold down a job. |  |

Our Swansea West MP Thorsten Bell was on the radio a few minutes ago making this point, but he wasn't prepared to admit that recent policies on NI, minimum wage and workers' rights have accentuated the problem However, one key point is that since COVID we are doing much worse than before in comparison with other countries, which does suggest that recent policies may have had impact.
The recent Milburn Report says: "A decade ago, our NEET rate was closer to the average of European Union countries. Today, Britain is an outlier. By 2025, only Romania recorded a higher youth NEET rate." Milburn says that welfare is part of the problem and criticised the recent U-turn on welfare reform. There is subtle reference to the impact of recent policy on employers: "Taking on a young person is always a risk for an employer, precisely because they are unproven. If public policy aims to increase youth participation, it has to minimise risks and maximise incentives." While Milburn is cautious in not putting too much weight on the impact of immigration, he writes: "Migrant workers typically have arrived with prior experience and a willingness to work irregular hours. If an employer has a choice between someone who is 28 with five years of experience and some who is 18 with no work history, the hiring decision can be economically rational." He accepts that it is part of the overall picture, which is affected by multiple factors. | | | |

It just outlines how right wing the Labour Party is, the Conservative party friendly media calling NuLabour a socialist party is joke, it's a lie and they know it's a lie, but thick people believe it and there are a lot of thick people around. |  |

The problem I've always had with work experience type schemes is that they reinforce the negative ideas that your labour only benefits others.
If you're going to be forcing kids into work then pay them. Help them to understand the benefits of working and the pleasure of being paid at the end of the week/month. You don't have to pay them £15 an hour, but pay them quite a bit more than they'd get on benefits. Hammer home that bit of information. | |

Online shopping and the decline in people visiting shops on a Saturday hasn't helped. Its not only the shops but intown cafes ect which fed off the Saturday shopping market. These were the mainstay of Saturday jobs and the market has changed, if establishments are not busier on a Saturday they don't need extra staff. | | | |

Well done to him, the demise of entry level jobs means those willing to work and with enough drive to progress are having their options reduced. | |

Down our way, a lot of the companies and organisations who used to offer work experience no longer offer it, red tape and a multitude of other issues including insurance, H&S etc etc. A lot of the kids I know who have managed to secure placements get it through family connections, without those they’ve had it. | | | |

The insurance is a massive factor, I know if one company who used to take children on work experience and were quoted an extra £2,300 pa on top of their policy to have under 18s working and there was a load of basic training that had to be done like manual handling, its just gone insane. | | | |
