Call me cynical but it’s an awful coincidence that a high profile, public anger inducing case like this where the perpetrators get to walk free because of jury indecision despite being clearly and obviously guilty of the offence suddenly appears at a moment where the government is controversially trying to abolish the jury system. |  |

Quite honestly, just about any other police force in the world. It’s just this country whose police force is fighting with both hands tied behind their backs.
I’ve got to say, I’m outraged about what happened but to see the police officer crying her eyes out because she got hit was not a good image. That may sound harsh but people in this role need to have tougher personalities than they do maybe. |  |

Unfortunately the Police are now politically employing people in quotas. Box ticking. I would have absolutely hated it if that WPC had been my daughter, relative or friend etc. I do hate what's happened to her. I've had my nose rearranged on Rugby pitch a few times when I was younger. Even went out on the beer in the evening once. Which was a huge mistake as had delayed concussion the next day. People react in different ways..shock we all deal with it differently.
Anyway two absolute scum bags have got away with GBH . Playing devil's advocate if those two blokes had been Caucasian would they have got away with it? Ask yourself. You know the answer but we are probably to scarred to say it, otherwise you will be racist. It sucks!! | | | |

I only became aware of the outcome after seeing it on here. I’m appalled by the result. I don’t agree with Lammy’s moves to get rid of trial by jury - but seeing this result I could be persuaded that there are times it would be beneficial.
From what I understand based on articles I’d read, it looks like this is the second time that a jury has failed to reach a decision in the case which is why the CPS aren’t looking to run it again. The 2 guys should be doing some serious porridge. [Post edited 30 May 7:02]

People are angry because they have not researched the matter properly. The BBC or journalists should explain the result now the case is over.
One brother has already been convicted of attacking two WPC and another policeman as well as a citizen. He can expect a custodial sentence. It seems he was the main trouble maker. He is due to be sentenced. The second brother the case was not so clear cut and the case was for the attack on an armed officer by the two.
This event was highly dangerous he was armed. Two juries determined he was not violently assaulted and failed to convict. Did ths second brother punch anyone ?
It seems to me to be a matter is fine detail. That is what trials are there to determine. They should not work in emotion or biasses. They have have have had plenty time to assess all the evidence and have declined to convict the second brother. They understand the event better than the general public having seen all the evidence.
I would like to see a comment by the BBC legal fellow Frank Gardner ( or whoever it is these days) to comment. If he is satisfied then I see no need to comment. If he expressed surprise or astonishment then that is different.. He deals in detail. I just see clips. The Black Belt Barrister is a little too political for me and I do not trust his judgement.. What I cannot understand in in this case is any manhandling of a PC is deemed assault as is the manhandling of an individual from the public.
Or throwing something at them - this is clearly a physical confrontation resisting arrest with contact regardless of whether a punch was thrown.
A WPC once told ne in a convo about the stupidity of areas of the law where common sense has gone out the window that an individual once threw a teatowel at his wife in an argument - they were obviously heading for the rocks as she reported him for it - and said it's your turn to wash up I'm sick of doing it and was given a caution . No idea if this is an urban myth but no real reason for her to lie. [Post edited 30 May 21:11]

I seen it somewhere that apparently the defence case was that the policeman was out of control and not following procedures and his client thought he was going to be killed by the armed policeman, I don't buy that myself, but it seems like some of the Liverpool jury did buy it, enough of them not to reach a verdict anyway. | |
