The below extract from Healey's resignation letter seems to indicate that Starmer is making promises internationally that he is reticent to fund.

"Conflict in the Middle East, with the UK now leading the multinational Strait of Hormuz military mission; High North security, with the UK now leading Nato’s Arctic Sentry mission; increased Russian activity towards the UK and Nato nations and increased attacks in Ukraine, with the Paris Agreement confirming a British deployment to Ukraine after a ceasefire."

Jonathan Beale at the BBC says Allies were beginning to ask questions.

Mark Rutte when asked to comment said " I respect John Healey very much".

This looks like a crisis for the Government. In the past resignations like this have had very serious consequences for PMs.

I think he's right to call out lack of funding.

However, the amout of waste in procurement in the forces is eyewatering.

I reckon a lot of people would accept payiing more tax if they could see it making a difference.

I think many can see that the current government do not have clue how to run the country. Basic policies are detrimental to the country not beneficial. Yes pay more tax if it would make a difference but current policies are making things worse and higher taxation will just be poured into the black hole.

It’s the worst crisis since the one the other day or the others the week before.

I really don’t think the issues with defence can be pointed at the current government. It’s been a farce for decades with billions poured away.

I was thinking of Heseltine or Howe, but this seems a worse situation. Of course, Boris's demise was triggered by a spate of resignations but Healey's departure stands out more than any single one at that time.

I wondered why Sunak called an early election.
He knew what he was passing over.

Since the end of the we cold war in the 1980s we have eroded defence. Defence spending has halved as a proportion of GDP, Welfare has doubled.
The shit has hit the fan now, the Government is pulling apart rather than together, Streeting and Burnham, Ministers resigning and multiple u turns.

Historically, procurement in the defence sector wasn't great. In the late 1980s, with a shake- up in NHS management, a number of persons who had been involved in MoD procurement were recruited to Trust Chief Exec posts. Those I came across didn't do very well.

The speaker of the house Lindsay Hoyle gave a bollocking to the government today over rumours that they are going to “sneak out” the defence review tomorrow which is conveniently and completely coincidentally a day Parliament isn’t sitting. He said members have been waiting almost a year for this and the house should be the first place where announcements like this are made. He finished with the scathing remark that the members of the House of Commons are second class citizens when it comes to this government.

Would you be prepared to give this government extra money in taxation and trust them to spend it wisely, it seems nothing is this governments fault.

Nope. They’ve been poor so far.

I’d like to see them saving money, particularly on the welfare bill and redistributing that before upping taxes.

They won’t do it, it would be too unpopular. Particularly if they start where they should do by scrapping the triple lock.

The triple lock is pretty pointless because the government just take it back in tax. Personally my state pension is above the tax threshold so I actually pay tax on my state pension. Nobody should ever pay tax on a state benefit.

I disagree with that last point.

There are plenty of people out there on benefits taking home per month significantly more than I do, yet I pay tax and they don't.

If they're not going to be paying taxes on their income then benefit rates should be set at a point where they don't exceed a full time salary.

My understanding is the tax taken back account for about 30% of the overall bill?…

I read state pension and tax threshold are now about equal. About £1000 per month. Reeves does not need to raise income tax as tax income will rise due to inflation as the tax free threshold £12k is fixed to 2030.

Private pension have a 25% tax free component. A person with a private pension can get £24k p a oe £2k a month tax free.

My point was the triple lock is just a headline grabber and pointless if you are going to claw a percentage back it tax. Lift the tax threshold and do away with the triple lock and tax sensibly. It just seems silly paying the benift then taxing it. Tax savings and income through personal pensions but making a big deal of the triple lock then taxing the benefit is just headline grabbing.

It's 25 percent of the pension fund that is tax free. Both private and public funded pensions have a tax free component.

If you have a £20,000 fund then a tax free element of £5,000 applies. If the fund is £100,000 then the tax free element is £25,000. How and when you take the pension payment varies.

There's a question around this, pension contributions get tax relief so the tax free element is open to discussion.

Pensions are said to be the last resort of Governments in failure.

It’s not my area of expertise but I believe even with the clawback, the bill will be billions by 2030.

The net figure sees to that.
