Football has jumped the shark.

It really has gone to the dogs.

Those of us of a certain age can you imagine anything like this happening 30-40 years ago ?

Mental..

Beljims not happy.

Official RBFA communiqué in response to the FIFA suspension granted to Folarin Balogun:

« The RBFA is stunned by the FIFA decision to declare the American player Folarin Balogun, who was suspended, eligible to play in the USA–Belgium match on Monday, July 6 at 5:00 p.m. (Seattle time).
FIFA bases its decision on Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.

This provision states that the FIFA Disciplinary Committee may decide to suspend the execution of a previously imposed disciplinary sanction.

However, Article 66.4 of the same FIFA Disciplinary Code clearly provides that a red card (dismissal) automatically results in a suspension for the team's next match, as has been the case for all previous red cards issued during this FIFA World Cup.

Furthermore, independently of the foregoing, this decision is in direct contradiction with the provisions of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Competition Regulations, as provided in Article 10.5:

« If a player or team official is sent off due to a direct or indirect red card (second caution), he will automatically be suspended from his team's next match. In addition, further sanctions may be imposed. »

The automatic nature of such a suspension was also explicitly reaffirmed in FIFA World Cup 2026 Circular No. 16, which was distributed to all participating member associations on May 12, 2026.
The same rule is repeated at every FIFA World Cup 2026 match coordination meeting before each match and is included in all FIFA World Cup 2026 workshop presentations.

In order to safeguard the legitimate rights of all participating teams and to protect the fundamental principles of fair play in our sport, both during this FIFA World Cup and in future editions of the tournament, the RBFA is examining all potential options. »

" as has been the case for all previous red cards issued during this FIFA World Cup."

Technically correct, but very (intentionally) misleading language.

FIFA used Article 27 to reverse the latter 2/3 of a Ronaldo suspension, so Portugal benefitted doubly then vs what the USA gets now.

Ronaldo should have served his full ban. This just takes the piss out of everyone who has had to serve a punishment but they are not important enough. It all stinks. You could argue that we got relegated from the Premier league because one of our players got send off and had to serve his full ban.

Most of the footballing world has nothing but contempt for the USA, bordering on hatred the way this has been played out. Belgium are now everyone's second team and want them to win. If the USA win it will be a hollow victory.

It has. 1968 Garrincha for Brazil. Sent off in the semi final v Chile but then played in the Final.
However, no specific rule regarding an automatic suspension then. Left to a Committee decision.

There's an old adage two wrongs don't make a right ! As another poster has said the Ronaldo decision was wrong too . Why at the moment do you t feel that you have been wronged and that its right for your Government to intervene ? What possible justification can there be? If your Country do not win overall , will your Leader lobby FIFA that tyou be awarded a special prize ? LIke some kind of Peace Award to match his Individual award or would you like Greenland as a prize for participation ?

The guy is clearly not so bright either

A " gift from the head of FIFA". would be to wipe clear all booking and red cards for all players carried over in the intention of seeing the best players in the later stages.

I am sure he could of pulled it off and as it applies to all teams would not be seen as unfair. Call it the " Gaza tears rule" .

Garrincha's red card happened in 1962. There wasn't a World Cup in 1968 ('62, '66, '70).
