Stoke City v Swansea City : Latest pre match, Ronald & the third strip too 14th Aug 2026 09:02
Swansea City travel today to prepare for their opening Championship match of the 2026/27 season against Stoke City. The Swans have three out for this one and the Potters the same, but the away sides missing squad members is quite impactive. 1

All the key stats

Potters v Swans : Can the Swans break their terrible return at Stoke ? 14th Aug 2026 18:27
The inimitable style and writing presence of Rhys Clayton analyses the very meaning of pre match and delves into the unknown again. In other words here’s a report on the Swans. 1

Stoke City v Swansea City : Pre Match, Teams, Latest and links 15th Aug 2026 09:09
The Swans take on Stoke City later today at 3pm backed by nearly three thousand fans at the Bet365 stadium in Staffordshire. We will have all the latest news as we build up to the first game of the 2026/27 Championship football season. 1

Stoke City 1 Swansea City 2 : Fulton magic & Adam Idah seal the win 15th Aug 2026 18:25
It was Swansea City who came up with the goods at the Bet365 today in Staffordshire. A competent and more ruthless display earned the Swans the points and really at the end of this game they were very much deserved. At times there were question marks but winning here for the Swans very rarely happens with Ethan Galbraith anonymous throughout the game thanks to Jay Fulton and Marko Stamenić. 4

Swansea Independent : Oh what a brilliant day in Stoke ! 16th Aug 2026 11:04
Rhys Clayton has a look at the win at Stoke City which was unexpected for many, but what a win. We should always celebrate positively and yesterday was certainly reason enough. 1

Swansea City: Lawrence Vigouroux; Filip Lissah, Ben Cabango (captain), Stephen Welsh, Josh Tymon; Jay Fulton, Marko Stamenic, Elijah Just; Joseph Opoku, Moussa Yeo, Zan Vipotnik.

Substitutes: Andy Fisher, Josh Key, Melker Widell, Jisung Eom, Tiago Parente, Leo Walta, Adam Idah, Ronald, Carter Heywood.

We have a stronger squad this season
Welsh for Burgess and Zan for Idah
Play the full 90 like the first half last week ,shoot more instead of trying to walk it in and we can do it

We know Cabango has played on the Left hand side of central defence before even coming on in Walles games on the left, it is not a position I would feel confident of him playing but could Lissah or Welsh play in the position, given how much praise Lissah has last season is it time to use him after a fill season in Scotlamd and having seen him in the previous games where he did little wrong and a lot right, will he face a tough challenge in the Championship will he make mistakes of course he is young and will have to step.up, given he had cramp in the Legane game in the last ten minutes does it make sense to make sure Welsh will be utilised extensively in the coming weeks with the number of games to be played or will Matos pick Welsh as Burgess's stand in because of his experience and as it is an away game.
Am I right in think Lissah has had a couple of first team games minutes the season before last?

Another question is will we see Matos adopted a 4-4-2 system having a number nine with a runners of him we have seen him uses it very briefly last season but only when juggling his subs around Inoussa played off the number nine for about 10 minutes but was then moved put wide and Woodward had an excellent introduction last season to assist with a goal , wasn't that as a runner of a number nine, Idah I think.

Yes, Lissah had some 1st team minutes 2 seasons ago. The difference in his play, imo, is like night and day. He played very well last Saturday. I would rather see him start as our right FB ahead of Key and put Welsh in Burgess's CB position. You can always bring in Key later in the game and either move Lissah to a CMF in front of the back line or in for Welsh or Cabango. Lissah needs to be on the field for most, if not all the game.

Agree with your comment on Lissah improvement, nice that he got enough playing time last season to improve, surprised we let Congreve go given his playing time last season.

A heavy run of fixtures for Lissah to play all 90 in and I haven't seen much of Welsh does he need minutes to add to his sharpness but again can we expect him to play 90 minutes in all the fixtures, with the loss of Burgess with hindsight was sending Sam Parker out on loan a mistake or will the Benfica lad come into the reckoning on the left.

As for Key's issues and to some extent Tymon's are they mainly due to us tucking in the fullbacks to make the centre hard to play through but it leaves the opposition wingers free to have the ball and run at the defence high up the pitch, most solid defensive teams in the championship play the two lines of defence against us making the progress down the wings almost impossible, when we get our fullbacks tight to the wingers they look much better the only thing then is being careful the opposition don't have space in the channels with runners through the midfield which against Bimingham we struggled with in the second half as the full backs strive to get forward more, which happens as we open the game up with the need to attack.

Getting that balance right is tricky in the Championship especially as teams can change so much with the substitutions, we see games of two halves in stark contrast so often.

Most of the teams at the top of the division last year played a much more direct game, sit deep when defending and break fast utilising pacy forwards.

I do feel our ponderous style has to change if we are to get out of this division as teams have now become far too comfortable letting us have the ball and putting the emphasis on us trying to break then down with 11 men behind the ball.

Hopefully the coaching team have identified a plan B otherwise it will be a long old season if we just continue with the style we had last season. We need to adapt and flex tactics game by game rather than play the same way regardless of our opponents as that is what happened last season, let's give them something different to think about this time.

Amen to this
Brum basically did nothing first half but fight like Ernie Terrell ) peek a boo) then take an opportunity when it arises
Then back to base

I didn’t see much in innovation nor adapting to the games flow

That’s why “ some” are concerned
No harm in that

We are also still a small team and vulnerable to bullying

For sure, we are going to miss Franco

We can definitely win, over 2,000 away supporters will be very vocal and the atmosphere will be electric, possibly taking the new players by surprise. The heat will be very draining but we have enough options in the middle and up front for the players to work incredibly hard and we can make changes. Im going for a 1-2 win.

In the first half we played a lot more direct or long balls got it to Idah feet qui kly and played through the middle but towards the end of the half we left gaps

I would take a 1 1 and try and keep Galbraith quiet in the game. 1 nil with Zan the. man be better though with our keeper having a stunner under the high ball.

Centre of defensive and midfield far too passive letting players come off them into space add the fact that the fullbacks haven't noticed the changes made by the opposition and pushed up too far leaving gaps in behind more so on the left as Lissah while played a lot more forward balls and remained solid on the right. Playing the long ball and making defenders make mistake allow the midfielders and backs to come onto the ball keeping pressure on the opposition, teams negate this by playing the long balls even though Birmingha's centre forward won a lots of aerial battles it was when they got the ball on the floor they caused us more problems changing tactics to test our defending or concentration.

I hope we dont react at all , F him , he`s gone he`s just another 1 of 11 opposition players we have to deal with , let the players take care of him on the pitch . I still have Sam Clucus fresh in the memory and boy did he enjoy playing against us . Dont give Galbraith the extra 10 % motivation by baiting him , use it for the lads in white .

Birmingham pushed both full backs onto Yeo and Opoku giving them no space to receive the ball and because we had Stamenic and Fulton together playing slow and deep they just marked our players up
If we’d gone long with a few goal kicks instead of of the chuckle brothers routine we could have got the ball over their press more and made them change their own tactics and opened the game up
As it was they let us keep the ball in our own half going sideways and back and saw the game out

Agree that playing out from the back is a problem because the swapping of play from one side to another is done so slow, that wasn't because of having Stamenic and Fulton on the pitch in that first half period where we succumbed to their press, we became predictable and offered very little variation in play Tymon push ever forward to try and force the play and Stamenic dropped into the centrehalves, the wing became exposed and we left space in the middle leaving both exposed to attack.
Yes similar happened in the second half lea ing us on theback foot unable to gain any worthwhile forward momentum with or without the Fulton and Stamenic pairing.
I think we caught Birmingham's out in the early stages of the game by our directness but then reverted to type leaving players or spaces not covered properly.

The first half Birmingham pressed us often having 4 pressing high up the pitch. In the second half they sat in a rigid 442. We had space to play at the back but could not get space up the pitch. The subs did not seem to help especially pushing Just out wide.

Answer :- if you need to go Forwards ….. don’t play Stamenic and Fulton together…..And just stop the slow and pointless farting about with goal kicks and go forwards with pace and ambition

Put simply :-

To win games :: go forward = score goals

To lose games 94% possessions ::in own half = trying to walk the ball in the net = no SHOTS on target ,usually = 0 points

We are so much better than this , and with a stronger squad

Once they had scored they just kept things tight and tried to catch us on the break. Hope Matos doesn't fall down the rabbit hole that Sheehan did.

He has had enough time in my book now to understand our style from last season is not going to be enough to get us into the play offs this year in a much stronger league.

The coaching team now has to earn their money, they have been backed in the main on new players over the past 2 windows so need to find the solutions to unlock games rather than just plodding along like we did for long periods last season.

The fact that a lot of fans can see this means the coaching team with all the analysts, tacticians, etc they have employed must see it also? Results of course matter, getting the fans off their seats matters, creating more chances matters - 60% possession in our own half less so. This will not bring the big crowds back or generate a buzzing atmosphere that gets the fans behind the team and gives us the 'extra man' especially at home.

Hoping we see a more progressive style starting tomorrow at Stoke.
