A letter from WWI 16:13 - Apr 9 with 2673 viewsDarran

Just been given a file of old family letters and I know some people like this kind of stuff.

This one shows that in 1913 my great grandfather bought my great uncle out of the army for £18.
He signed back up in 1914 and got killed in action in France in 1916.
(We're a lucky family us)

After he'd been killed in action my great grandmother wrote to the army asking for a refund.
Made me smile anyway.

Then the army wrote back saying because it was my great grandfather that had bought him out it would have to be him who wrote for the refund.

What was her address Dar, i can't make it out.

People back in those days had immaculate hand writing.

I want a mate like Flashberryjacks, who wears a Barnsley jersey with "Swans are my second team" on the back.

We did some research on my missus's great uncles who faught in WWI a few years ago
We found one was buried in Lebucquiere war cemetery in France, the other returned after the war,but sadly died of his injuries, they were both under 20 years old, I'm sure that every family in Britain has a similar story to tell. Brings everything into perspective eh! Brave lads going to a foreign country, for some an adventure, for others not, truly gut renching stuff, shaped families lives forever.

What a good thread in among the football turmoil.

I've got a photograph album handed down from my late grandfather and it contains images taken during his time in North Africa during WW2. Fascinating stuff.

Have you thought of making copies and donating them to the IWM?
