"The Darkest Hour" - about Churchill
"Wonder" - a fictional story about a real life condition (Treacher Collins Syndrome) and how a little boy and his family cope with all the challenges they face
Both brilliant

I want to see that.

I watched Get Out finally this weekend. I enjoyed it, although it faded at the end I thought.

Fantastic build up to not a whole lot was get out. Three billboards the film of 2017 for me. The shape of water is well worth a watch too.

I'd still recommend it though for anyone that hasn't seen it.

I haven't been so fussed on seeing the Shape of Water. I'm sure I will do, given its plaudits, but it all looks a bit odd! I'll probably love it having said that.

I also want to see Lady Bird. Many people who have seen it say they were robbed by winning no awards and it's fantastic.

Lots of good films out at the moment.

The Shape of Water film of the year for me so far.

Based on the Creature from the Black Lagoon a love story with a twist.

The lady from Paddington Sally Hawkins in the buff too...well worth a watch, brilliant movie.

Nominated for 4 oscars.

The first half of Get Out is excellent. The last act is just standard gore and horror cliches, which was disappointing

3 Billboards for me film of the year, darkest hour very good, did not enjoy shape of water was a combination of Creature from the Black Lagoon/King Kong/ Beauty and the Beast. Get out what a shame about the ending! Enjoyed I Tonya

Never knew getting old would happen so quick!

I must be the only one who thought the Darkest Hour was faintly silly if enjoyable enough political soap opera fluff. Oldman chews the f*ck out of the scenery. Doesn’t strike me as the cinematic masterpiece everyone seems to think it is.

My favourite film of 2017 was the latest 'Bladerunner',
although '3 Billboards' was surprisingly good.

Best film for kids (and I enjoyed it as much as my boy did), obviously I'm not talking toddlers, was 'War for the Planet of the Apes' I reckon.

Good fun, rather than good films, were 'Trainspotting 2' and 'Baby Driver'.

The recent Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy is superb. “War” is the best of the three. Very bleak.

Agreed.

Everyone seems to like 3 Billboards. Which doesn't surprise, as Frances McDormand has been brilliant in everything I've ever seen her in.

Fargo remains one of my favourite films, as does Olive Kitteridge and Mississippi Burning,

Indeed. The message from the film was very strong and our two teenagers were moved by it (very unusual) and apparently it is a popular book and film among teenagers

Three Billboards for me, followed by the Darkest Hour, Bladerunner 2, The Post, All the money in the world, Molly's Game, the shape of water, the death of Stalin - all in no particular order as enjoyed for differing reasons.

Oddly, I've been on a bit of a cinema-fest, and seen all of the films you mention in the last few months.

I say oddly because my better half is almost phobic about going to the pictures. But I seem to have cracked it by avoiding the crapola multiplexes, with their popcorn-chomping teenagers, and opting for the local Picturehouse.

Sneaking in a 500ml bottle of diet coke liberally laced with her favoured Bacardi turned out to be a good move too.

Shockingly, though, there were no more than a dozen people in attendance at any of these films (average age 53 and half).

Had the whole back row to ourselves. So empty I even got away with having the odd puff from my e-cig.

Shape of Water was OK, a bit too sentimental for me, but Sally Hawkins is always worth the entrance fee. Some people have said it owes some of its style to Jeunet's "Amelie" - the latter is top French fare, and I'd recommend it over Shape of Water.

Lady Bird was enjoyable, not least because of the portrayal of a poor-ish, middle class, American family barely able to keep their heads above water - not something Hollywood specialises in. And because the female lead was taken by a pleasingly, atypically "un-pretty" actress.

Thankfully, no barbie dolls in 3 Billboards, either, which was the best of the three.

As for Darkest Hour: Owt to do with Churchill-worship makes me want to gip. Wouldn't pay tuppence to see it.

Worth paying a tenner mate just to see the lovely 😊 Miss Hawkins in the flesh...even pleasuring herself in the bath in several scenes.

I didn't know where to look I can tell you,I thought she was a prude but not so...

Fargo is a brilliant film. McDormand is fantastic as is William H Macy and Steve Buscemi.

The best of the Coen Brothers films for me.

The 3 series of Fargo are also very good. Each are one off series, nothing to do with either of the others, having different characters and storylines, but there is a very tenuous link in series 3. You may notice it, you may not.

I've not been paying attention the last year or two so I don't know if this is a particularly good time for movies or what. But there don't half seem to be some good stuff around at the moment. I've been so out of touch that I only got around to watching whiplash Monday night, a modern classic that.

I'd forgotten about the new bladerunner, saw that on the plane back from the states, kind of wish I'd saved that one for the cinema. I've got many of the films above on my watchlist, along with "The Post" and the one I'm most looking forward to is "Gods Own Country".

I watched the "The Florida Project" the other night which is an excellent film, cinematically gorgeous.

Upthecity!
