He's right about ball skills being developed on the street. The thing is, the players these days are super athletes, players from years ago would never keep up with them. It is a terrible shame that we have footballers earning £50,000 or more a week who are unable to cross the ball with accuracy, even when they're under no pressure. The abysmal standard of heading also is almost laughable, it's almost too much to ask of a player now to get his full head on the ball, so many times we see it glancing off a earhole or cheekbone, even a shoulder is not that unusual. Luckily fans born in the 1970's or later would not know what I'm talking about, but I still remember the lound groaning noises, and even sometimes laughter, the Vetch crowd would make in response to badly taken corners or crosses. Sadly now these low standards have become the norm. I sometimes wonder what people like Curt and Leighton James think when they see players with such poor ball skills, earning these ridiculous sums of money. Having said that, we played some fabulous football at times yesterday, and Dan James is probably playing his way into the January sales. he was a different class. | |
