The Royal navy routinely sent boys (15-17) to sea, even in wartime. Many kids were lost when HMS Royal Oak was sunk.
They stopped sending kids to sea not long after. |  |

My dad said that you could join the merchant Navy at 16, my dad's friend was so keen to support the war effort he joined a ship on his 16th birthday. His ship was sunk by a U boat a week later, he survived and swam to the U boat only to be pushed back into the sea. |  |
