Just for a little bit of balance, I was in school with Mark, played in many teams with him over the years and hung around with him outside of school for a couple of years until he moved to another village. I hadn't seen him for about 10 -15 years when he comes in to a pub just before Xmas with a couple of other people I know for the annual Xmas piss up he has when he comes to visit his family.
A mate I worked with, a huge Man Utd fan, had just been diagnosed with cancer and was awaiting an operation and it could be his last Xmas with his young family. As soon as I saw Mark, a thought came in to my mind. I asked if he'd do me a favour and speak to him on the phone and wish him a happy Xmas. I felt awkward asking because I hadn't seen him for so long but he said yes straight away before he'd even had a drink.
Now this pub is popular because it has very poor mobile reception and so wives/girlfriends can't get in touch with you. We had to walk about a quarter of a mile until I could get good enough reception. He spoke to my friend for a couple of minutes before walking back to the pub and his wife said it really made his Xmas, he couldn't stop speaking about it. That was over 10 years ago and I don't think I've seen him since but that's the Mark Hughes I know. Even better was my mate made a full recovery. Mark was/is quite a shy person and we had a laugh when he first became a pundit because if anyone isn't cut out to be one it's him. |  |
