SPORT
Explained: Why this Aston Villa deadline day transfer fell through
The midfielder looked certain to be heading to Villa Park.
A hamstring injury prevented Aston Villa from signing Leroy Fer on deadline day from Swansea City.

The 29-year-old was at Bodymoor Heath for a medical in the closing hours of the transfer window when problems started to emerge.

It's understood that Villa had concerns over the length of time he would miss with the injury and then moved onto other targets.

Fer, who missed Swansea's win over Millwall on Saturday, remained in south Wales with Daniel James who also missed out on a deadline day move to Leeds United.

Contrary to reports elsewhere, wages were not an issue, BirminghamLive understands and the only hitch was Fer's hamstring setback.

Villa signed Tom Carroll instead but he has also picked up an injury in his first week at Villa.

What? You mean it wasn't part of Jenkins heroic last act of defiance?

Have they checked with him? He'll put them straight.

Do I detect the slightest hint of sarcasm there?

I heard it was like the end of The Graduate with our hero banging both fists on the window.

Couldn't get hold of Huw.

He was busy brokering a deal with the Arabs whilst blaming the Trust for Laudrup getting sacked and telling everyone how he was prepared to work for nothing and didn't really want his 600k a year salary this after pocketing 7 million from the sale.

It was stupid Fer even going there for a medical after he'd been injured in the Birmingham game only 48 hours earlier FFS. Just shows how desperate our owners were to get rid of him.

I was quite surprised they signed Carroll not played for us since October.

He was probably pretty keen to secure a long term contract with no wage cut as well to be fair. They're offering their players more than we can, and more than they should as well. They're banking on promotion or a massive fee for Grealish to balance the FFP budget.

Sounds like a good loan deal if they are still playing his wages if he is injured.

This is what the Pearlman spin merchants said at the time:

"Skipper Fer was linked with a deadline day move to Lille and Aston Villa, but has decided to remain with the Swans to give manager Graham Potter a double boost for the run-in."

What they really meant was "We were desperate to offload our skipper Leroy Fer to avoid paying his wages but unfortunately he was injured and failed his medical, so we are stuck with him as we seek to coast to the end of the season while screwing every penny out of our loyal supporters"
