As a club we are in a terrible financial mess IMHO and it seems like Trevor Birch may be what we need

So if this guy comes in confirmation ,not that any was needed, that the club is in the sh!t, right up to its neck, so what are the options open to him.
Let's see, to cut wages, for playing staff etc. This clubs main aim is to play football and be competitive, we have already cut our cloth massively, with a few exceptions that we need to cleared off the books, it seems to me that we will need to offload, some of our most valuable assets even further, the likes of Fer and James to name just a few. Can someone explain how the heck, we are going to be competitive on the field with a team consisting of under 23s and lower league bargains.
This guy needs to be some kind of bloody genius, to get this little lot sorted.

Thing is nobody knows if there is a mess or not because the people who blagged the sale of the club Inc the Americans are about as transparent as fcking black paint.

I refuse to believe these cnts until they show some honesty.

He's come in with one aim only, and that is to sell as many of our assets as possible whilst cutting running costs right to the bone, irrespective of what damage will be done to the clubs long and short term future.
He's here for the short haul, that's for sure.

Thing is Loyal, if these rumours are true and this fella is appointed, he's a firefighter and that can only mean one thing, were in a mess, a big one, so he needs to be good at his job, very good.

I get an inkling that the club is soon to be Birched!

I get a vibe that this guy is gonna be nothing more than a financial/football equivalent of (pit closing) Ian MacGregor whom was brought in to do the dirty work of others i.e. to close, to cut and to make redundant.

It'll be spun that he's some kind of troubleshooting 'Red Adair' tough-medicine and tough-love specialist doing extremely unpopular things that are for the clubs long term interest(s). And because of his genuine football credentials (as opposed to Jenkins roofing tile/Upvc downpipe background) a more credible and useful PR tool.

Argus!

Correct me if im wrong, but we weren't in this financial mess last time out.
Football has moved on since then.

Not by selling key players, we kept the core together. Now, maybe that can happen again but we'll have to wait and see.

Things have changed since last time. The top of the league has got a lot richer, and whilst there's always a chance someone can buck the trend of spending our way out to promotion it's much harder to do so now.

This is what we're up against:

Nobody wants to see us incur debt and become a basket case, but at the same time we have to be realistic that clubs who don't run at a loss don't do very well, unless they have a very productive production line of kids they can sell for significant amounts each season.

If we're going to be run cost neutral, our expectations need to change. That tactic is likely to put us at risk of relegation more than promotion. Or to put it another way, this league appears to be too expensive for the Yanks.

The Premiership isn't exactly cheap either. I had a rant about this on another post

Yep. And we weren't having to adjust to a period of mismanagement with PL costs either. Quite the opposite; the rapid rise must have meant costs were trailing performance rather than the opposite that we have now. With our current model we can't start to see the wood for the trees until all the PL costs have gone. Up to that point it's inevitable that we'll be haemorrhaging money. The trouble is we'll need to haemorrhage money beyond that point to be competitive, but the owners won't want to do that.

We're probably not in a mess relatively for this league. The issue seems to be we're just too expensive for the hedge fund (a point I'll keep repeating until such time there's any evidence we can compete financially).

It's not. From what I've seen the financial challenge is a lot tougher in this league though. Far more clubs run at a profit in the PL, for example,

It's a shame the accounts are released about 9 months after the period they represent. We'll be in the dark guessing about this season for at least another year.

Vastly experienced, he will no doubt be cutting costs from day one with an objective of balancing the books and we all know what means. Expect another cull from the first team squad with the big earners on their way. That in some cases will mean the certain loss of our best players incl James Fer Van Der Hoorn but also high earners like Routledge Dyer McBurnie and the sale of the players out on loan at present.

But it's not all doom and gloom. You can still use a card to make a purchase in the Club shop without 'Caseys Roofing' appearing on your bank statement. That I'm assured by the way was a legal way of transacting a sale... 👍🏻

God it's fascinating stuff. You could make a film out of it all. 😂

Fer & VDH are out of contract & no way be they will be offered decent enough contracts to stay

Be surprised if anyone pays Routs/Dyer the same wage they are on with us so they will both be here next season

I agree about James & Oli both saleable & be gone next season

Agreed, and I'm no expert obviously just a dumb punter, but there is a huge difference in models between running a PL club and an EFL club, trouble is I suppose it that we are in transition, and things have to change, but we've brought a massive cluster fvck with us, so it's not going to be easy, having said that we are a football club, and we have to be competitive to stay in this league, otherwise it's down the plug we go. Not going to be easy, good luck Mr Birch.

Potter and vdH have both confirmed he has an extension clause available if we want to exercise it. So he's not going to be a free agent.

Routledge is also out of contract.

You’re probably right Flash. The romantic in me clings to the belief that despite being a Fellow of the Institute of Bean Counters his footballing background will allow him to see beyond current market value when it comes to valuing our talent pool.
