Julian Winter CEO Speaks, possible new Cooper contract 18:09 - Jan 23 with 997 viewsKeithHaynes

Fair play to his response to the 11 million valuation for Rodon.

Chief executive Julian Winter says Swansea City's finances are "solid" and believes the club will be in a "strong position" should they return to the Premier League this season.

Swansea, who are second in the Championship, have endured financial challenges since relegation from the top flight in 2018.

Winter says promotion would be a "wonderful step".

"I think we'll be in a strong position if we do get promoted," he said.

"The club would be resourced at a level that it hasn't been for a number of years.

"We all know the club's had three years in the Championship and (about) the economic challenges of living in the Championship as opposed to the Premier League.

"Going back to the Premier League would obviously be a wonderful step, but we would have to be in control of the numbers and not get carried away.

"If you get in the Premier League, the amount of money you get as a consequence of being promoted, it's about managing effectively with that number.

"I always get a little bit astounded by clubs that have £100m from the Premier League and then need another £100m from an owner or an investor."

Winter, who joined Swansea in September 2020, says the sale of Joe Rodon to Tottenham in October improved "the security of the club moving forward".

Swansea were criticised for selling for Rodon for just £11m, with the fee potentially rising to £15m.

"Everyone can argue about player valuations but what it did do, it allowed us to get four players in, three permanents, which is a big step in the right direction," Winter told BBC Radio Wales.

"I think out of that the squad did become stronger."

Winter also praised the "marvellous" job done by head coach Steve Cooper.

"The progress made I think in terms of the football identity and the improvement of players, which is all of what you want to see from a head coach, translating into performances and results - you couldn't ask for much more really," he said.

Cooper signed a three-year contract when he took charge at Swansea in June 2019.

Asked whether the former England Under-17s coach could soon be handed a new deal, Winter said: "It's always possible. At some point he'll have earned that."

A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.

We'd all have liked more money for Rodon, but apart from Spurs nobody else wanted to put money on the table. It is what it is. What we did get has been reinvested very well indeed.

Like the common sense approach to spending too. It's the only sensible way to run a football club. From what I've heard we're in a better position than a lot of clubs in the current Covid situation.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Nobody doubts that Rodon could well have been worth more but the situuation re the pandemic and clubs struggles made holding out for a better offer pointless.
AS Winter says, that money was reinvested and we are stronger for it. If we still had Joe would we have Bennett, Hourihane, Morris etc?
If we get promoted I don't want to see another boom nd bust, I'd rather get relegated with finances firmly under control so we are strong enough not to have to do another firesale, not to have to accept low offers for players because we are dead broke and even technically bankrupt!

Dr W, you have been the most consistent voice in this, you said it then and you're saying it now. Financial pragmatism should always be the way forward.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a huge fan of the concept of FFP. If a local billionaire wants to finance his childhood team to the Premier League he should be allowed to do so, but enough cash to cover every financial commitment should be lodged with the FA/League before a deal can go ahead so clubs aren't left in the shite when things go wrong.

What I don't like is the hypocrisy of football supporters as an entity. Everyone wants their team to spend money and sign players. Almost none would insist on that being done within the clubs financial ability, yet they're the first to turn on owners if the shit hits the fan. Team owners who only spend what the club can afford are generally loathed.

If we can afford to bring players like Hourihane then great. If not, then so be it.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

I agree with FFP to an extent. Clubs shouldn't be allowed to spend more than they have and then do dodgy deals to stay afloat (such as sella ground to it's owner at an inflated price) and it's always the fans who suffer.

Then, you are right about fans too. Look at the moaning on here about how much we received in transfer fees but complete denial about what we've spent and what our long term costs are. If we'd spent big and gone bankrupt that would be wrong too, even to those most ardently demanding spend, spend, spend!

People still claim the owners are robbing the club but today Winter said we are in a good position. In this time of so much uncertainty, having the club in a strong financial position is priceless.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Fan have seen massive profit evaporate.
Not all are accountants nor have access to the clubs accounts. They just pray for the best and then get the likes of Winston chucking patronising perjoratives their way.

We made 50m yet spent 2m recently.

Average Joe entitled to ask questions -or maybe not as if he does his fellow fans will call him for all sorts.

This year's FA cup where the Crawleys and the Cheltenhams (as we speak winning 1-0 against Man City after 65 mins) shows how we are more than capable and proven to box clever in the player market.

I could pick out 7 or 8 players from Crawley and Cheltenham who could do a massive job for us. It's from this pool of home grown talent we can excel at recruiting and developing in our Swansea Way of playing this beautiful game.

Exciting times. In Scott and Cooper and Winter we trust.

Precisely.

Thing is you've got total doofuses who can barely spell their own names casting aspersions on the financial situation of the club, despite a wealth of easily available evidence being there for them to peruse at their leisure.

There must be a strong case to be made for access to the internet being dependent upon the results of an IQ test.

We still have to pay the wages and running costs (travel, hotels etc) but with massively reduced income. Having a bit in the bank is fine by me, if we get promoted and the owners manage to take a dividend, that's fine too!

Twice we've almost gone out of existence through overspending. Could have been a third if Birch hadn't got to grips with things. If there's any club in the league whose supporters should be unified in lockstep behind the idea of living within your means it's us, yet even now there are, to be charitable, misguided individuals out there who demand that we spend more.

From what I understand the sales of McBurnie and James were crucial. The cash raised from those took us from on the edge to basically secure, yet if you listen to some people that money was shipped back to the States in big bags with dollar signs on them like you see in cartoons.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and there's lots of people out there with very little knowledge.
