Fair Tax Town 18:17 - Jan 19 with 1212 viewsjohnlangy

This programme about Crickhowell is on tomorrow night.

Essentially it's about small local traders who have decided to do something about the way big businesses get away with paying little or no Corporation Tax while the small businessman just has to pay because they haven't got the financial clout to avoid it.

What they've done is get together a number of local businesses to make it financially viable and they're organising their own tax avoidance scheme in a similar way to the way big business is doing. Their aim is to get 10,000 small businesses involved (I heard the number in passing. I believe that's right) then they'll go to George Osborne and tell him what they are going to do. And he won't be able to stop them because it's legal.

It's an interesting idea. What if all small businesses got involved. What if none of them paid Corporation tax (or very little). It would be billions lost to the treasury. What would he do ? What could he do ?

If you're interested check out the website (fairtaxtown). You can give support even if it just means signing the petitions they're going to organise.

Sounds fantastic. Can we also sign a petition voting on which bit of the NHS we want closed down because of their tax avoidance? Or perhaps we could stop pensions until people are about 85 or something.

Pressurising those big companies that get around the rules is to be praised and every single loophole should be closed. Encouraging people to avoid paying their own fair share is not.

I don't think the whole thing is geared that way. I think it is designed to show the existing system is flawed. All people want is a level business playing field for all, big or small, and this is a 'dramatic' way of portraying how unfair things are at present.

Everyone knows it's unfair.

More companies refusing to pay tax is not the answer.

I don't disagree with your sentiments, I personally would be willing to pay more tax myself, especially if it was spent locally on hospitals, education and social care.

However I don't believe everyone does know it's unfair. I doubt your average Maccie D, St*rbucks or KF£ user knows or cares they are housed abroad or offshore and take advantage of local tax rates there. No company is 'refusing' to pay tax as far as I am aware, they are in it to raise awareness of the unfair nature of the scheme for smaller businesses in the hope the playing field will be levelled. Most UK governments have a poor track record in terms of standing up to the big boys.

The truth is that anyone who takes advantage of corporate taxation legislation overseas is not 'refusing' to pay tax, they are legally restructuring their accounting system/location to minimise their tax burden.

Nice post, although you will be a social outcast for saying you are prepared to pay more tax as that will be seen that you expect others to pay more tax and Mrs Thatcher made sure that tax is a dirty word.

Then the government need to harden up on companies such as Starbucks, and make them pay what they owe. Why should the ordinary man and woman have to pay tax every month , and those companies pay f all ?

I've only seen trailers of the programme so far and what i've heard them say is that they want, and are more than willing, to pay their tax but also want the global corporations paying as well.

Watch it tonight.

It's probably a disastrous idea but, what if the minimum wage was raised to, say, £10 an hour and the government scrapped Corporation tax.

That way ALL companies, the Crickhowell ones AND Amazon, Starbucks etc etc would be unable to avoid paying tax through their employees wages.

I suppose the first thing that would happen is that the people running these big corporations (no better than thieves imo) would move abroad to some other more amenable country who would accept their tax avoidance.

Because these companies have their hands up politicians arses and are working them like Gordon the gopher.

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

Completely agree with you.

Very easy to do - they should just impute a sensible level of tax based on revenue for these companies. They do it for London cabbies so could easily do it for Starbucks etc.

The issue though is people should vote with their feet and they don't. I've stopped buying at Amazon (apart from Kindle books where I have little choice). I use my local book store and just accept that I'll pay a couple of quid more. Same with music and dvds (which I've stopped buying really).

Easy to say that and yes I fully agree with you. That is what logic says is the right and proper, morally responsible thing to do and nobody has any problem with that. Oh, except for the 10,000 or so of our ruling class, the politicians, the senior civil servants, the treasury advisors, the financial movers and shakers, the public schoolboys who polished all their shoes and are now in business in the city. Look closely enough at their DNA and they are all unnervingly closely related... except Michael Gove thank God.

The word tax and Mrs Thatcher is very modern history. I am a non conformist small L Ceredigion Liberal, a similar species to those from mid Wales and the Northern Isles of Scotland. They pre date the socialists, but even before them they fought against any election that was usually won and lost on the economy and taxation ; human nature requires a parliament elected on the basis of personal gain or greed and not the wellbeing of all the members of the state. A sad state of affairs.

Top tip for this year.... get your money out of the stock market, especially the far eastern sector. Along with the steel sector (as PT sadly realises) China is now approaching the peak of unsustainability with its Ponzi economy. There is nobody left to invest, so somebody higher up is going to cash in. Make sure you don't have too much credit in the clearing banks is my tip.

Bit of a rant there, sorry.
