Crazy how we defend with 11; put a player in the centre circle and he will generally tie up 2 of the opposition. Only very rarely in the last 20 years have we employed this tactic.
One game that we employed this tactic was the awesome PL game against West Brom when we were 3-0 up at HT.

I run a local under 15 team and I always encourage 2 of my players to stay at the centre circle when defending corners taking out 3 of the opposition team to worry about them as the 2 I keep there are normally quick and small.
Can't see the point of having to many back as they get in each other's way and half don't jump at corners |  | | |

It makes sense to keep a player up front, it would keep 2 or 3 opposition players out of the area.

Potter went for broke when he pulled VdH off - it wasn’t even 3 CB’s, it was more like LB, CB, RB and the space between them was enormous.
When we pulled it back to 2-2 I genuinely thought we would go on and win it. Unfortunately we got hit with the sucker punch. |  |

Possibly Connor wasn't having much joy so he was dropped back and Naughton sacrificed! Who knows?
I'd have had Naughton in midfield and taken Byers or Carroll off.
But there again I'd have had Mulder in goal, Dyer & Rutledge on the bench with CBR. | |
