Edit: I can’t recommend this highly enough if the film has piqued your interest. I romped through it in a couple of sittings, it’s likely to remain The standard text for generations to come. Superb!

Watched a ten part series on Vietnam on PBS America recently, supposed to be the definitive tv history of the conflict. It was superb. Reminded me of so much I'd forgotten, living through it as a teenager in Britain. Sorry, don't have any linkys or anything but I'm sure you Google experts can reference it. I can't recommend it highly enough, it was like the Vietnam version of tbe World at War, very balanced and with eye witness accounts from actual participants on all sides. And a lot of what was going on politically in the USA, of course.

I caught Max Hastings on Jeremy Vine Show on BBC Radio2 a few days ago. Fascinating interview and strong words from a man who was reporting in the thick of things at the time. I've not read much on the Vietnam war and despite seeing many of the films made of the conflict and some vague recollections as a youngster, as to what was happening out there at the time, I have little knowledge of what brought about what Hastings describes as "an epic tragedy" . I will certainly watch the documentary and hope to get hold of the book.

Flicking through the channels one night I came across a film just starting called Hearts and Minds, a 1974 documentary about Vietnam. Absolutely brilliant.
Not exactly balanced as it is pretty much an anti war film.
It's available on Youtube.
The scene where the US commander in Vietnam, General Westmoreland gives his view on "the Oriental" is chilling.
I highly recommend.

I’ll watch that in the morning, Hump. Nice one.

Didn't know the Beeb had edited it. I'll Netflix it and watch the whole thing.
Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Not for the poor bastards enslaved by communism they don’t.
Enslaved by the Communists you say, at least they let some of them go, like McCain, the capitalists just dropped napalm on children, blew the brains out of handcuffed prisoners in the street and their American friends burned villages and murdered raped and tortured women and children .

That’s the thing about civil wars, Tramp: they are not terribly civilised.
