Morgan Whittaker’s first-half brace helped fire the Imps to victory against Cheltenham Town and guarantee a fourth successive season in Sky Bet League One.
City’s three goals were scored in the first 20 minutes, with Anthony Scully also getting on the scoresheet. The win means City are safe in League One - the first time since the early eighties the club have spent four consecutive seasons in the third tier.
The Imps started brightly and took the lead in the fourth minute. A superb switch-ball from Lewis Fiorini picked out Whittaker who touched the ball down and comfortably slotted it into the bottom corner.
Cheltenham’s start to the game didn’t get much better as Aaron Ramsey was then booked for simulation a few minutes later.
City continued to threaten the opposing goal as Fiorini found himself with space on the edge of the box. His curled effort beat the gloves of Owen Evans but was denied by a post.
A decent opportunity for City to double their lead arose in the 12th minute with a free-kick from 20 yards out. Liam Cullen whipped it over the wall but Evans gathered it comfortably.
City did in fact double their lead five minutes later. Whittaker was played in down the right before finding Cullen at the back post. Cullen had his first attempt saved and second attempt cleared off the line before Anthony Scully hit the back of the net.
Whittaker then found his second goal of the afternoon in the 19th minute to put the Imps three up. His cross-goal effort from outside the area beat an outstretched Evans and found the bottom corner.
The visitors came close to pulling one back as Alfie May was picked out at the back post, but the forward could not react quick enough to direct his header at goal. May had another chance shortly after with a free-kick but his effort deflected behind for a corner.
A wayward pass from Robins defender Will Boyle in the 38th minute fell straight into the path of Scully. The Imps’ number 11 got a shot away but Evans made an impressive stop to deny a fourth goal. Cheltenham manager Michael Duff opted for some fresh legs at the halftime break, bringing on Lewis Freestone for Ramsey who was on a yellow card.
Whittaker looked to continue from an impressive first half performance as he went searching for his hat-trick. He let fly on the edge of the area but his shot sailed just wide of the post. Freestone was the second Cheltenham player to be booked by referee Simon Mather after taking down Ben House in the 57th minute.
Former Imp Ellis Chapman was replaced by Elliot Bonds mid-way through the second half. Moments later, Kion Etete had a golden opportunity as he rounded Jordan Wright and hit the post despite having the whole goal to aim at.
Imps striker Tom Hopper made his way onto the pitch in the 73rd minute replacing Cullen in the centre of a front three. Max Sanders then replaced brace-scoring Whittaker as City looked to see out the win. May was the third Robins player to be booked following a late challenge on Jamie Robson. Scully came close to scoring moments after but his shot was blocked by Boyle.
Attendance: 8,672 (209 away)
A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.
Both players need a good end to the season. Both have got game time and I expect both to have toughened up in a more physical league. It is not unreasonable to expect a bedding in period.
The sports scientists should assess if both should spend the summer in the gym. Cullen like Piroe is technically sound and a clean striker of the ball but perhaps too lightweight in ball retention and determination in the 6 yard box.

He will compliment the front two next season with Joseph ðŸ‘
I agree. It's odd that we have a free scoring wide man who is only 20yrs old yet so many want to sell him. I hear others say they'd prfer to keep Garrick- why? Garrick is 4yrs older and has never been consistent at all. Cullen is probably a League 1 standard player so better to let him and Garrick go but keep Whittaker and Joseph who have more time to develop.

Garrick is 23 years old and Whittaker 21 years old. a 2.5year gap not 4 year gap.
Garrick Stats at Plymouth are good with 7 goals and 8 assists for a full season at Plymouth. Whittaker has 3 goals and 1 assist in his half season at Lincoln.
Garrick has more games under his belt and is more versatile playing centre forward, winger and wing back.
Garrick is more highly thought of at Plymouth than Whittaker is at Lincoln although he has time to change the narrative. One has to give these players time to develop.
Garrick was dogged by muscle injuries at Swansea affecting his consistency. This problem has been solved it seems although the Plymouth manager has been rotating him quite a lot possibly to protect his muscles.
Garrick is faster than Whitaker by all accounts. He liked to compare his speed to Dan James. Ogbeta is also reported to fill the speed gap. Martin has not risked Ogbeta yet preferring and out of position Wolf. Having a versatile player like Garrick could allow a smaller squad as cover for Christie and forward players.
If Ogbeta and Garrick can step up Swansea do not need to pay £1-2m extra in wages for high rollers Wolf and Christie. Returning loan players often disappoint when the contract is in the bag. This money can be given to Piroe and Downes in new contracts.
There is something good about developing talent through the age groups.
Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

Cullen ?
I think Cullen will go. Not sure about Whittaker, next season is make or break at Swansea for him.

Here’s the highlights of Morgan’s two goals. He had a cracking game by all accounts. His number is 7. Apologies for the duplication. But if anyone missed it above, it’s worth a watch.

Think I'll bump this post as it's from April. Resolven was pushing the claims of Jordan Garrick in comparison with Whittaker. Obviously Garrick is again injured but their stats now are: Garrick 120 apps 15 goals (age 24) Whittaker 112 apps 20 goals (age 21)
Pretty clear to me which of these will be the bigger star, eventually. And it won't be Garrick. We'd be mad to let Whittaker go.

I would like to see Garrick converted into a right wing back. He impressed me in a FA cup tie v Stevenage where his created an assist for Goykeres 's only goal for Swansea. He has played a RWB and winger.
Garrick is more versatile than Whittaker but agree Whittaker has better prospects. Garrick once talked as challenging Dan James for speed on the training ground. Perhaps he is not made of the right stuff. Garrick has played RWB, winger and centre forward. It seems things re not going the right way for him. An ideal signing for Newport where his buddy Aaron Lewis is playing well.
