| Anyone on here understand train ticketing? 18:06 - Apr 17 with 1800 views | Gwyn737 | Trying to book a train ticker for my mother to return to Swansea from the south east. The connection between Charing Cross and Paddington is about 50 mins which is a bit tight for her as she’s 79 and pretty slow. Tried to use the ‘increase connection time’ on the website and when you go to book it won’t do it. I’ve spoken to both National Rail and GWR who say it can’t be done without booking an anytime ticket or splitting the journey into single individual tickets, either of which way trebles the price. Surely this can be right? | | | | |

But I would download the trainline app and tick the box for splitting the journey. Hopefully it will give you a couple of options if you are able to play around with the departure time slightly. Often on the app you will find prices you can't get direct. I don't know if she has a rail card, but that often pays for itself in one journey. | | | |

| Anyone on here understand train ticketing? on 19:08 - Apr 17 with 1726 views | EagleEye | Splitting tickets would be the best way to do this journey but best prices will only be obtained by pre-booking, well in advance. There are 3 tiers for ticket pricing between Paddington & Swansea - they used to be called peak, off-peak & super off-peak. To get the cheapest fare she would generally have to leave Paddington after 11am but before 3pm on a week day. There are options to get cheaper fares by booking them in advance but the prices will still be tiered primarily based on departure times. Schedules & tickets are available for 3-4 months in advance. I would suggest booking at least 4 weeks in advance to get best prices. Prices on the GWR main line are amongst the most expensive in the country for journeys of this distance. Expect longer journeys but no price reduction due to engineering works on many weekends especially Sundays. May be worth trying this app https://www.splitmyfare.co.uk/ | | | |
| Anyone on here understand train ticketing? on 19:15 - Apr 17 with 1709 views | Gwyn737 | It still works out at double the price through that app. I can book Battle to Swansea with the suggested times (with a railcard) for £32.65 from mid morning. Splitting the journey works out £11.20 for Battle to Charing Cross, plus tube cost then £33.30 from Paddington to Swansea. None of it make sense! Thanks for trying to help 👠| | | |
