Apologies, I’ve corrected it. Talk TV is closing, not Fox.

That’s the case now, but it wasn’t always that way. Under the ownership of the Australian banking and investment group Macquarie the utility’s debt jumped from £3.4bn to £10.8bn, dividends totalling billions were also paid out. It’s entirely possible large fees were also paid from TW to the owners. The pension schemes came in later, their members money is now potentially at risk.

TALK TV
at 23:08 17 Apr 2024

Talk TV is part of the Murdoch empire (much like Fox in the US), the Talk TV channel is closing this summer. GB News is another channel on the right, it’s under scrutiny at the moment having allegedly breached all sorts of impartiality rules and in many quarters there’s unease about the lack of oversight of the channel by Ofcom. If Labour win the next GE, I’d expect a change at Ofcom where perceived bias will be investigated and firmer action taken.

Edit clarify a point.

A Victory For Common Sense

I’m a tad miffed by all this. If you choose to go to a particular school, in this case a secular school then accepting the rules as a condition of entry is part of the deal, if you don’t like it then clear off and go somewhere else.

In general I’ve go not issue with the HRA because there is some very good stuff in there, but it’s been twisted and skewed by all sorts of people to suit their agenda. Cases like this should require a significant contribution from the parties initiating the litigation. Does this case mean the school will be out of pocket as a result of having to defend the case as I can’t see the cool getting legal aid!

It may also be the case that where trees at the side of the motorway grow beyond a certain size the Council, Trunk Road Agency or whoever will cut them down because of the risk they pose in the event of a collision, thinner saplings and trees will bend and break where as larger trees won’t give at all.

The council et al have to becareful because if they chop the trees down on the steep slopes adjoining many mountainous roads it could result in landslides when it rains heavily.

Opposition to new smoking ban

It would be really interesting to see how many of the MP’s who spoke against the proposed ban have received money from companies and or groups lobbying on behalf of tobacco companies. MP’s who have received payments in relation to a particular matter, like smoking, gambling or whatever should declare an interest and step aside when it comes to parliamentary business on that particular issue.

In her new book Truss continues to bleat about her demise as PM and blames the deep state, unelected elites, judiciary and she also blames the civil service for not being able to secure a Brexit deal with the US. In my opinion she’s off her trolley and as has been shown not up to it.

I’d be pretty surprised if they didn’t have this type and level of data as local authorities would use this type of information to inform decision making around road safety initiatives, Gosafe would potentially use it for speed enforcement profiling. Used to know a few traffic cops and they use to have to put a stats form in every time they dealt with a road traffic collision where there was an injury, all that info you’ve described would be captured.

There’s defo a place for controlled immigration, but the uncontrolled immigration and the illegal immigration needs to be sorted out properly. Unfortunately we have a government which is divided on immigration, the finance people, the Treasury and some big industrialists want immigration as it “boosts” the economy and is a source of cheap labour, others have different views and want it under control.

The government definitely need to sort out the illegals and the legal immigrants who commit serious crimes, I’d look at changing part of the Human Rights Act to bring in a caveat about being detrimental to the public good of the U.K. - people who are convicted of rape, murder, sex offences, burglary, serious theft, most driving offences where death is caused etc are launched out rapid style. I appreciate they may have kids etc or parents still in the U.K., but that comes second best after consideration of the offending. Rape someone and your outski regardless how many relatives you have here.

It’s worth pointing out that most immigrants come here, keep their heads down and work hard.

Angela Rayner

This is a little ironic, the “source” of the Angela Rayner story is Lord Michael Ashcroft, former very senior official in the Conservative Party and someone who holds British citizenship, Belizean citizenship and who is a belonger of the Turks and Caicos Islands. It also appears that Ashcroft’s tax affairs have been subject of scrutiny in the past.

He was created a peer in 2000, and sat on the Conservative benches of the House of Lords until resigning in 2015. It appears Ashcroft was supposed to take up permanent residence in the UK for tax purposes as part of his peerage, but it was reported a decade later that he had failed to relinquish non dom status. It also appears that in his 2005 biography, Ashcroft admitted that Belize is a country where his interests have been "exempt from certain taxes for 30 years" meanwhile the Turks and Caicos don’t have income or capitol gains tax.

There’s now an investigation (and quite rightly ) in to Rayners affairs over £3.5k non payment of taxes and if she’s broken to law she has to go, but Ashcroft’s tax affairs have probably saved him considerably more money that Rayner has profited by. To me, it strikes of double standards.

This story is a little unusual in that the source is an unofficial biography which was instigated/commissioned by the former treasure of the Conservative Party Lord Michael Ashcroft. There may be some truth in the allegation, but equally there may not be and it may be nothing other than a smear to gain a political advantage.

If she’s dodged tax and committed a criminal offence, then in my opinion she has to go which is what she’d said she’d do. Interestingly, she’s previously indicated she’d publish her tax return if Sunak and Hunt published theirs - the story died a death for a while after that but it’s now back- do we’ll see what pans can out.

The 20MPH punishments
at 00:07 13 Apr 2024

About 2.5 years ago wifey was driving at about 24/25 mph in a 30mph zone when a child of secondary school age stepped off the pavement directly in front of my wife’s car, said child was thrown on to the bonnet, over the windscreen, along the car and landed on the road. Wifey’s car sustained over £2.5k worth of damage. The child was taken to hospital where they were checked out, luckily they didn’t sustain any major injuries only a few cuts and bruises. The police attended, investigated and submitted their report - we received a letter informing us No Further Action was being taken a few days later. It appears the child wasn’t paying attention and was more interested in their phone than road safety.

Had wifey not been traveling below the speed limit then the child could have been seriously injured. There’s defo a place for a reduced speed limit and there are defo benefits in having a 20mph limit, but it needs to be a sensible pragmatic approach.

The morons, idiots, incompetent will be a danger whatever the speed limit.

Sadly it’s not limited to Cardiff Bay, this type of response and action could often be seen at the Home Office between 2010 and 2020 when pay review body submissions were submitted in respect of police officer and prion officer pay increases. If Teresa May didn’t like an outcome she’d ignore it ! It’s outrageous.

WG government spending should be focussed on the NHS, this scheme and the increase in AM’s should be consigned to the bin.

The WG also needs to reduce the number of local authorities in Wales, streamline the number of Chief Executives, directors etc and preserve the front end of service delivery.

We had the right to deport people who were unable to financially support themselves after arriving here and we also had the right to deport foreign nationals who committed crime in the U.K., but we hardly ever did it.

You need good systems, a robust process, good administrative systems, the judiciary and government departments to talk to each other. We ain’t got great systems in place.

It probably is. Look at what happened with the Covid frauds, they reckon £7bn was rinsed by fraudsters; look at the PPE scandal hundreds of millions of pounds worth of contracts went to people with “connections” - some of the equipment was completely unfit for purpose - the Mone contracts were £200m on their own.

Many imports from Eastern Europe are hard working people just like many of us on here, they come here because they want a better quality of life, get better jobs, earn more money and have better opportunities for their kids. There are also those scumbags who come here to cheat, steal and prey on the vulnerable, but they are in the minority, the good far out way the bad.

I had the misfortune to be have 2 family members in a local hospital over the last 7 days, they were cared for by Poles, Czechs, Filipino’s, Syrians, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Indian, English and Welsh people who all work together to treat people. I’ve also recently had cause to visit a large factory employing about 1200 workers in the South Wales area. It’s hard graft, pays not great and most of the workers on the production line are Eastern European, but it’s 1200 workers paying tax and NI when indigenous British workers can’t be bothered to get off their backside to work because of the cushty benefit lifestyle they enjoy. What would happen if this company didn’t have the Eastern Europeans (and other the nationalities) working there? They’d shut up shop, the jobs would go, the government would the lose tax from the company’s profits, the local economy would suffer etc etc. The reason why the Treasury have been reluctant to alter the salary level for the visa threshold is to ensure companies in the U.K. can still recruit workers when Brits don’t want to work.
I know a polish guy who’s joined the British police, he came here, worked as a carer in a care home, became a special constable, then a PCSO and now he’s a cop.

In relation to this particular case, it’s happened over 4 1/2 years between 2016 and 2021, a time when our public services including border control, policing, HMRC etc have been cut to the bone, but we’re not hearing much about that.

We’re getting plenty of BS from government and a marked lack of action, the government should tweak Article 8 of the Human Rights Act so that the right to a family life is subject to a “conducive to the public good” test - in short if you commit crime you’re out and the appeals system should be expeditious, not subject to extended delays which they are now.

I’d also require anyone who wants to claim benefits to provide biometric ID, for example a finger/thumb print which would be kept on a secure system to prevent an individual claiming in multiple names.

There’s good and bad everywhere, what we need are robust and effective practices to boot the bad out and that comes down to governance and law - it’s an area where we’re lacking.

The Brilliant Welsh NHS
at 22:31 8 Apr 2024

The situation in Wales mirrors what has happened in England where between 2013 and 2022 they lost around 20% of their GP practices.

Between March 2022 and March 2023 there was a decrease of 376 GP’s in NHS England, while in Wales during the period Sept 2022 to Sept 2023 (nearest comparable dates) there was an increase of 50 (3.3%) in GP’s in Wales.

The population is increasing and aging and there are capacity issues across the entire NHS.

One way to increase capacity is to increase the number of places at med school so that there’s a continued flow through the pipeline, but our government have failed to do that, done f he save suggested they don’t want to increase training provision now because it takes 5 years to complete med school and anyone starting last year would be coming in stream in 5 years time when there could potentially be a Labour Government who would reap the benefits!

We’ve been let down by both Cardiff Bay and Westminster.

The sudden rise of AuDHD ...

I dare say that a lot of the problems schools and the wider community have to deal with stem from poor parenting.

I know a guy who going back to the late 60’s and 1970’s was a bit of a load, thief, burglar etc. He ended up having 4 or 5 children who became problems for the wider community, they got in trouble with the police, bunked off school and became NEETs, courts, prison etc and were huge drain on society. They’ve now grown up and have their own kids and the cycle is repeating itself. Over the course of 3 generations it’s gone from 1 to about 4/5 to around 15. Based on each of the 15 having 2 kids and not making lifestyle changes, we could be up to 24 to 36 “dysfunctional”individuals in 20 years.
When the kids are young they don’t know any different, they get their values and moral compass off their parents and they’re brought up in to dysfunctional world, their lives are likely to mirror those of the previous generations and will be filled with Adverse Childhood Experiences , in addition their long term prospects are poor.
