County Of Southampton
County Of Southampton

Your just a small town in Southampton as the song goes, but did Pompey fans know that untll fairly recently this was actually true.

We all assume that Hampshire has been the ages old name of our beloved County, some of us may have also known that Hampshire is the shortened version of Hamptonshire, but did you know that up until 1st April 1959 its official title was "County Of Southampton"

Neither did I !

It original popular title was Southamptonshire and it appeared on maps right up to the early part of the 20th century as such, it was shortened at times in both speech and in writing and was often referred to as Hamptonshire r Hampshire, but its official title remained "County Of Southampton" right up till 1959 when it was changed to "County Of Hampshire"

This will obviously come as a shock to those Pompey fans born before April 1959 as they now have to come to the realisation that they were born in Portsmouth County Of Southampton meaning that for all this time they have been calling us Scummers when the truth is they are Scummers as well

A small piece of local history to liven up your day and remind us all where all the history actually is in this fine County Of Southampton

I believe you stand corrected:

The County of Southamptonshire was an administrative title for county council purposes only and does not supercede the historic name of Hampshire.

After the establishment of Hampshire County Council following the Act in 1888 Southampton became a County borough within the county of Hampshire, which meant that it had many features of County but the governance was shared now between the Corporation in Southampton and the new County Council. There is a great source of confusion in the fact that the ancient Shire County, along with its associated Assizes, was known as the County of Southampton[43] or Southamptonshire.[44] This was officially changed to Hampshire in 1959 although the county had been commonly known as Hampshire or Hantscire for centuries. Southampton became a non-metropolitan district in 1974.
