Saturday's AXA F.A. Cup 1st Round clash with York City will be the third time the teams have met this year, with York having won the two previous encounters at the Vetch Field. But the gulf in league positions between the two teams may not prove that significant, as recent form shows the Swans have taken 7 points from their last 6 games compared to York City's 5.
Swansea manager Brian Flynn will be forced to make changes from the side that defeated Macclesfield last Saturday with injuries to Paul Reid and Lee Jenkins, and Brian Cash's return to Nottingham Forest. The Swans will also be without the services of Lacey, Moss, Sharp and Smith. With the injury list growing, Flynn has included two of Swansea's "young guns" in Antonio Corbisiero and Jamie Rewbury. Both youngsters have earned rave reviews in youth and reserve team fixtures over the last few months and all indications point to at least one of them making their first team debut on Saturday. There is also good news for the Swans with the return of Terry Evans and David Theobald, as well as the presence of top scorer James Thomas who will be hoping to add to his tally of 9 goals.
Flynn's opposite number Terry Dolan is also forced into changes, as loan players Lee Cook (Watford) and Michael Reddy (Sunderland) have been withdrawn to avoid them becoming "cup-tied" and skipper Chris Brass is suspended. York's top scorer Peter Duffield will play.
With the very real threat of relegation at the front of people's minds, this cup clash will prove a welcome distraction for Swans fans everywhere and will hopefully be the start of an F.A. cup run which could boost both team morale and the club's finances. The past has proved that successful cup runs have been the catalyst for league success, let's hope that this is once again the case.
