In 1960/61, UEFA introduced a new competition called the European Cup Winners Cup. The name provided just what it suggested, a competition for the various cup winners throughout Europe to compete in against each other.
As a member of UEFA, the Welsh FA were allowed to enter the winners of the Welsh Cup into the competition, giving the Swans a route into Europe. On 7 separate occasions they played in the competition, mainly in the preliminary round but on one occasion (1982/83) they did proceed to the last 16 of the competition.
With the founding of the League of Wales in the early 1990s, the Welsh clubs playing in the English pyramid were banished from the Welsh Cup and therefore also from a route into European Football. UEFA disbanded the competition at the end of the 1998/99 season, with the cup winners from the various nations going into the UEFA Cup instead.
