Leeds Too Good For Roberto's Swans

Leeds United 2 Swansea City 0

Almost 30,000 were there for this game - an incredible figure for a League One game and testament to the support base that Leeds have when things are going well. They have started this season like a missle intent on just one target - promotion - and more and more people will start to believe on this form that they will do the impossible.

They were better in almost every department in this afternoon's game and a short spell in the second half undone all the good work that the Swans had achieved in the first half to keep Leeds at bay. Backed by 2500 of their own supporters the Swans gave a good account of themselves, even testing the keeper themselves on occasion but in the most it was backs to the wall as Leeds went in search of the club record equalling win.

Roberto was forced into a couple of changes from the side that started in Tuesday's win over Cheltenham thanks to the injuries to both Leon Britton and Andy Robinson. As expected, Tomu Butler and Paul Anderson came in to provide the width whilst Ferrie Bodde was recalled in midfield at the expense of Darren Pratley. Andrea Orlandi made the bench. Also back in the starting line-up was Marcos Painter

It's always difficult to get a ful feel for the game when you are behind the goal. When you are in a corner behind the goal it is even harder. When you are in the corner behind the goal just five rows from the front it is even more difficult hence that some parts of the match could almost pass by without any real idea on the way the play is flowing - but maybe that is actually spoiled a little by a view that is normally from the back row of the East Stand. But let's try my best and see what I can come up with.

Leeds started like the side they are - full of confidence - and seemed intent backed by so many to produce the performance that Dennis Wise had referred to at the start of play. Much of the possession was for the team in white and whilst the Swans looked dangerous of sorts with Anderson and Butler on the flanks then it was generally on a brief respite before the ball came back to Leeds.

The Swans had tested the keeper with a long range Butler shot before Leeds came closest to opening the scoring. A corner from the Leeds right was met by a powerful header that was well stopped by De Vries on his line and hacked away to safety.

Bodde was next to try the long range shot but again easily saved by the keeper before Prutton was seemingly hacked down in the box when poised to shoot. To my relief for sure no penalty was given - whether it was or not is one for the replys to decide - but the fact was nothing was given and so the game remained goalless. Kandol (?) squandered the best chance of the half though when through one on one with De Vries he slid the ball past the advancing keeper but could only watch in agony as the ball rebounded back off the post and to safety. Goalless at half time and maybe there was a hope that the Swans could sneak one and in turn a victory in the second half.

That hope was increasing as the second half progressed until Beckford pounced to open the scoring just after the hour mark. If truth be known I can't remember much about the goal itself until the final shot that beat De Vries and the Swans were a goal down. Orlandi replaced Anderson soon after the goal but the Swans were dealt a killer goal before it could have any impact.

Prutton was the man who hit home from the edge of the area just past the outstretched arm of De Vries and the home advantage had been doubled and the Swans were surely beaten.

Roberto responded immediately by introducing Pratley for O'Leary and Feeney for Duffy which in fairness did make us look more dangerous. Feeney produced the save of the match from the Leeds keeper and Scotland was unable to convert the rebound as the Swans looked to pull a quick goal back to make an interesting last 20 minutes of it.

Orlandi looked a threat down the left and the Swans were becoming more ambitious - as they had to be - whilst Butler and Rangel were looking more threatening down the left. Scotland's first touch let him down on a couple of occasions as the Swans looked to break through. Leeds though, for their part, always looked as if they had another goal in them and they were making Doris work for his money as they looked to add a third to the scoreline.

Feeney had the worst shot of the Day as he cleared the Stand with an attempt from the edge of the area whilst Orlandi went agonisingly close with a sweetly struck left footed shot that seemed to just evade the post.

It wasn't to be though as the home side celebrated a 7th successive win with their after match huddle - a 7th win that moved them out of th relegation zone in the process.

We were beaten today by the better side - whether that side is 15 points better than the rest of the division is hard to say but make no mistake they are far and away the best side we have faced this season.

Two home games now to follow - no need to panic after this game, plenty more football left in this season.
