Britton Aims To Claim Goal
Britton Aims To Claim Goal

Swansea City midfielder Leon Britton was talking odds as he tried to claim the first goal in the weekend victory

Britton believed that the odds on him striking such a shot were long enough as they were but he was prepared to extend those odds by trying to claim a goal that can only ever go down as one of the own variety.

As his shot bounced back off the post it hit the diving Paul Smith on the back of the head and rolled into an unguarded net to give the Swans a 6th minute lead in a game that they went onto dominate.

Goals are always a premium for Britton and it is understandable that he wants to claim this one but it looks like a long shot if not an impossible one even though his tongue may have been firmly in his cheek at the time he tried to claim it

He told the Evening Post after the game "It's just a case of me getting my head down and swinging on my left foot from that distance

"It seemed like time froze after it rebounded off the keeper, and I was just glad the defender couldn't get back to clear it.

"You would have got long odds on me hitting a shot like that, so I'm claiming the goal. Whether the ref will give it to me I'm not sure."

One suspects that he really is sure though - Paul Smith og will be deemed to stay in the record books at least officially even if not in the Britton household.....
