Rodgers, who rejected the chance to link up with Roberto Mancini as part of Manchester City's backroom staff, was sacked by Reading last December and has been out of management since.

The 37 year old takes charge with immediate effect and will meet his new players for the first time prior to tomorrow's friendly at Yeovil.

Alan Curtis and Colin Pascoe will both remain at the club, with Rodgers keen to add a conditioning coach to the backroom structure.

Huw Jenkins was pleased to finally land his man: "I'm delighted with the appointment. It's taken us a bit of time, but I'm sure Brendan will prove well worth the wait.

"We set down strict criteria for the job. We have a unique structure and playing style at the club that we were determined to maintain. There were a lot of boxes to tick and that's why it didn't suit some candidates.

He then moved up to reserve team manager before moving to Watford in 2008 - replacing Aidy Boothroyd - where he enjoyed a successful spell, leading the Hornets to Championship safety.

Following Steve Coppell's exit, he took charge at Reading where he was less successful, although he did have to cope with a number of first team players leaving, including influencial duo Stephen Hunt and Kevin Doyle.
