Giles: I Was Wrong About Derby Result
Giles: I Was Wrong About Derby Result

David Giles was this time stating the obvious when he admitted he called the South Wales Derby wrong

Giles had last week claimed that a Cardiff City victory was a foregone conclusion as they looked to extend their advantage over the Swans.

But a Marvin Emnes goal gave the Swans a deserved victory in a game that they dominated for the most part.

And that forced Giles to admit he was wrong as he told the Evening Post "I will put my hands up — I was totally wrong

"Swansea, from one to 11, were the better team.

"Every single one of their players is happy on the ball and they can pass it — even the goalkeeper can chip the ball to the two full-backs.

"The back four were brilliant, and as for Joe Allen, he is going to be something special.

"I knew he was a good passer and that he had nice feet, but on Sunday he showed he can compete as well against a difficult opponent in Seyi Olofinjana.

"The movement and passing in the Swansea midfield was good and Cardiff couldn't cope with it.

"I thought everyone in the Swansea side was great.

"The two wide boys ran the legs off the Cardiff full-backs and I thought Marvin Emnes was outstanding playing the lone striker role against two big, strong centre-halves.

"I thought he (Craig Bellamy) would be the difference but Cardiff couldn't get him the ball

"The two full-backs, Alan Tate and Angel Rangel were very strong and I think Swansea have the best two centre-halves in the Championship.

"Garry Monk just gets better and better the more I look at him.

"Nothing fazes him and he is a great captain. Okay, he might lack a bit of pace, but he never gets beaten.

"I just feel Swansea would be a different proposition if they had a 20-goal-a-season striker like Jason Scotland.

"Who knows, maybe they could keep hold of Emnes. I think if they could do that, they would be okay with Stephen Dobbie there as well.

"But if Emnes does go back, they will need someone else.

"Swansea have raised the bar with the performance on Sunday.

"And if they keep everyone fit, it is hard to see any weaknesses in the team. I really, really enjoyed watching them in the derby and I think they've shown everyone they are the best team in the league — there's no doubt about that.

"I can see them competing along with Cardiff, who will also get results in the Championship.

"I'm not being disrespectful to the rest of the clubs in the division but, let's be honest, it's not the strongest league this year.

"Both clubs have a fantastic chance."
