Brendan Rodgers says he is looking to tie down the futures of some of his key players

The Swansea City manager is keen to ensure that the likes of Joe Allen and Nathan Dyer do not get to the stage where there contracts have expired, allowing them to leave for nothing in return.

And Rodgers explained to the Western Mail “Players are assets and it is important to sign up the lads with one year left on their contracts soon

“But you can only do that if you have the finances. Other clubs will put themselves into debtk but we won’t. The board have run a tight ship here and run it really well.

“Last season if a player had a year left we couldn’t guarantee that those funds would be there – but now our promotion to the Premier League allows us to secure signings.

“For example, we have opened talks with Nathan Dyer. Joe Allen is very close to signing a new deal and I hope we will have Garry Monk signed up very soon as well. He has been a fantastic skipper for me and an outstanding influence in this club and group of players.

“The position we have moved into has allowed us to do that whereas we were never in that position and that’s why players have left the club.

“It wasn’t the club didn’t want to keep them, they just couldn’t guarantee them a deal."
