Fur Coats? Rolls Royces? And a Bentley?
Monday, 23rd Sep 2013 22:30

It was disgraced former presenter Stuart Hall who in 1987 enthused that the 'fur coats and Rolls Royces" were back at Elland Road following our FA Cup 5th round win over QPR. Now 26 years on are we about to get a Bentley?

David, now a vintage 29 year old model and once changing owners at £15m is apparently on Brian McDermott's radar to solve our lack of width. He was of course in the Spurs side who got their backsides well and truly kicked in last seasons FA Cup Fourth Round.

Bentley, who formally left Tottenham in the summer after his £50,000 a week contract expired is desperately seeking a new club. I have my reservations personally about signing somebody who has clearly been on a downward spiral for the past three years where he has completed four loan moves to different clubs including West Ham, Birmingham, Blackburn and FC Rostov whoever they may be.

I'm not getting overly excited about this one folks and can't see it coming off!

Md Dermott has now said

"David Bentley has been available for a little while and has been a good
player. But we've got Ross McCormack and El Hadji Diouf, so you're talking
about similar sort of players. Bentley is a good player, but when you've got
Ross and Dioufy, you've got players that are already in that mould. The last
thing that you want to do is stockpile players in a position, it's just not
right."

The phrase "has been a good player" suggests our manager thinks Bentley is now past it, though it's surprising that McD seems to regard him as a central midfield player rather than a wide man. Aanyway, it looks like it's not going to happen.
