Saints Linked With Pelle
Monday, 23rd Jun 2014 09:57

After a couple of months where every transfer story is one linking players leaving St Mary's its reassuring to hear of one where a player may well be arriving.

Its not the hardest link to make, whenever a manager joins a new club there will always be rumours tying him with returning to his old club to sign a player or two, in many respects it can be lazy journalism and that being the case sometimes has to be taken with a pinch of salt.

The latest transfer rumour is suggesting that Ronald Koeman will be returning to Rotterdam to sign Feyenoord's Graziano Pelle.

Pelle would appear to be a natural replacement for Rickie Lambert, at 6ft 4 he is a target man with an eye for goal and with the new manager could come a different style of play, Koeman is definately a manager who likes an attacking formation, but his style relys less on passing the ball around a lot in midfield than his predecessor at St Mary's and more about attacking with pace and through a target man using wing backs.

Pelle at 28 is in the prime of his career and this has not gone unnoticed by Leicester City who allegedly put in a £8 million pound bid a week or so ago, but the Koeman factor could well swing it in Saints favour, given that until Pelle linked up with the new Saints boss at Feyenoord a couple of seasons ago he was a journeyman player who never quite fulfilled his early potential.

Since joining Koeman though he could not stop scoring, in 2012/13 he hit 27 in 29 games whilst on loan and in 2013/14 after joining permanently he hit 23 in 28, to make it a round 50 goals in only 57 league games for the Rotterdam club.

Now he seems set to leave De Kuip and head to England, apparently he speaks fluent English although he never quite mastered Dutch, the drawback is his age, he will be 29 on the 15th July, but we should remember that we got good service out of Rickie Lambert who when he arrived at St Mary's was only a year younger than Pelle, but this will be reflected in the fee which should mean we get a quality player for less than we would pay for one that was say 3 years younger and therefore would have a greater sell on value.

Would prefer Borini @ about the same price, if not a little less

I don't know where you got the 'attacking from pace' bit from, Nick. Italian fans described him as lazy and said he was too slow for Serie A.
