Toby Alerweireld Could Be Fit To Return
Thursday, 25th Sep 2014 22:49

Saints Belgium international central defender could be fit to return against QPR on Saturday at St Mary's Stadium.

Toby Alderweireld trained on Thursday after missing the last two games with a hamstring strain, the Belgium defender was outstanding in the last home game against Newcastle but even if he comes through Friday's final session before the game on Saturday he is not certain of starting.

This is due to the fine form of Florin Gardos in both the second half at Swansea and up at Arsenal on Tuesday, this might persuade Ronald Koeman not to risk Alderweireld and keep Gardos in the side, clearly he is up to the task although not in the class of Alderweireld.

Ronald Koeman is not afraid to make difficult decisions though and will make the right one for the team and that might be to ensure that the Belgium defender is 100 percent for the visit to Spurs a game that on paper at least is tougher than the visit of public enemy number 1's QPR side.

QPR haven't scored in 3 away games this season (including at the "mighty" Burton in the cup) so Fonte and Gardos should more than enough to see them off. If TA is not 100% then there is no need to risk him. This squad has strength in depth this season!

Don't risk him - if he has a niggle then leave him out or put him on the bench as cover.

The Gardos and Fonte central defensive partnership was awesome on Tuesday night and our defence was only breached by a world class free kick that was unsaveable.

Sure the game will be different on Saturday with QPR expected to be more direct and try to hit us on the break, but we have strength in depth and as we know, Koeman is not afraid to ring the changes, or pick his team to suit his game plan against different styles of opposition.

Another 4-0 wiould be great, but I will take a 1-0. :0)

Very glad to hear this. I've been thinking that folks have got a little bit complacent about the depth of the squad already - Toby & JWP crocked isn't insignificant.

On the other hand if we don't get any more injuries, it's gonna be a killer set up when JWP & Jayrod come back in :o)
