Pre-Season Part 1 - Double Defeat For Southampton But Everton and Norwich Win

As you can imagine a Saturday afternoon meant plenty of pre-season fixtures for our Premier League rivals but who played where and what was the score? This is our daily round up of the pre-season action

Southampton 0 Valencia 1 & Red Bull Salzburg 2 Southampton 0

Southampton were beaten twice in the Audi quattro Cup at the Red Bull arena.

First off they were beaten 1-0 in the semi finals courtesy of Pablo Piatti’s solitary goal whilst they then lost the play off 2-0 to the hosts Red Bull Salzburg.

Havard Nielsen and Dimitri Oberlin sealed victory for the Austrian hosts.

Saints boss Ronald Koeman: “We were a little bit unlucky to go 1-0 down against Valencia. We had some good chances to score and two times we hit the bar. That’s unlucky.

“The second game there was less for us. They scored twice, and more sharpness what we expect from the players but we know it’s only the first week for most of them. We have to do more.

“We start Monday the third week of pre-season, little by little the players will get more minutes and go more to the team.”

Swindon Town 0 Everton 4

Everton opened their pre-season with a comfortable win at League One side Swindon Town.

Tom Cleverly was included in the Everton side for his debut and goals from Kevin Mirallis (2), Romelu Lukaku and Conor McAleny - all in the second half - were enough to give the Toffees an easy win.

Roberto Martinez: “It was a thoroughly satisfactory afternoon because the first situation where you play 11 against 11 for the first time is always a tough one.

“We’ve done a lot of volume work at Finch Farm this week and it has been great to see the attitude of the players.

“It doesn’t matter who you are playing against, to get a clean sheet shows the concentration levels were very, very good and from a physical point of view, I thought it was a perfect workout.”

Gorleston 0 Norwich City 7

It was even easier for Norwich as they trounced Gorleston by seven goals.

Former Cardiff striker Cameron Jerome was on target with a first half hat-trick as the Canaries found themselves five goals up at the break with Tony Andreu and Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe also on target

Lewis Grabban and Jonny Howson both found the net in the second half as Norwich won the first of their seven pre-season games

Alex Neil: “It’s important that we came here and tried to put on a bit of a show.

“We wanted to get the guys working hard and playing in the manner that they should when they play any game. I think you’ve seen that in both halves with the two teams that we had out.

“I thought it was a good, competitive game. They gave it their all and we worked really hard too. I thought we showed some good quality at times.

“They’ve been working really hard over the course of pre-season so far, they’re in good shape and I thought you could see part of that today.”
