Swans Criticised For Cancelling Friendly
Monday, 27th Jul 2015 12:47 by Planet Swans (follow us on Twitter @swansnews)

The Swans have been criticised for pulling out of a friendly against Haverfordwest County just ten days after local rivals Cardiff City did the same.

It was supposed to be a development squad that the Swans sent down to West Wales for the game but in a statement posted on Facebook yesterday, Haverfordwest announced that the game had been cancelled.

The statement read "For the second time in a little over ten days, we at Haverfordwest County AFC find ourselves in the situation of having to postpone a football match as a result of matters beyond our control.

"Today we have been informed by Swansea City that they are unable to fulfil the pre-season friendly with our club arranged for the 29th July at the Bridge Meadow Stadium.

"We would like to take this opportunity to express our disappointment that this fixture cannot now take place and would like to apologise to all supporters of our club and those of Swansea City for this situation.

"We are a little surprised at this latest cancellation, as this was not a fixture which had been initiated by our club. Recent events have certainly caused us to reflect on the 'benefits' of arranging pre-season friendly games with high profile clubs as it has proved a costly exercise for us both financially and in terms of the lost goodwill that such cancellations inevitably bring about.

"We must hope that the disappointment felt by you, our supporters, is not too acute and that it strengthens your resolve to support the club in the forthcoming Welsh Premier League fixtures

"Once again we can only apologise for this situation and assure you that we did everything possible to ensure that both fixtures would proceed."

Interestingly once the cancellation was announced via Facebook it was former Swans defender Christian Edwards who jumped in and offered an alternative

It is disappointing that the Swans have cancelled the game at short notice especially so soon after Cardiff did the same and you would hope that somewhere there has been a solution offered to keep any remaining goodwill between the two clubs.

I can fully understand why HV are so disappointed and in many ways are sympathetic to their cause. Now if the shoe was on the other foot going back just 10 years ago, then we would be feeling equally disappointed. Not knowing all the details with regards to the Swans decision for the cancellation I think it very none professional for leaving it so late to come to this decision. However, it is odd to say the least that Swansea City are following Cardiff City's example! They should have at least given them a rain cheque for a later rearranged date in the season when the club could somehow honour their commitment. This is coming from a Swans fan for over 50 years and the club is well known for leading as an example. This however is a blemish and as I fan as a whole I'm disappointed that Swansea City have turned their backs on a small club that had so much hope in having a Premier League club come to their small town! "Come on ye Swans" get it sorted and put it right!?

UPDATE...

I now have more info on this issue for the Swans point of view. The game was only arranged on short notice for our under 21's side to be played on Wednesday 29th. It was agreed last Thursday and then canceled on Sunday because of other matters within the squad that caused the club for concern!

The club did what was in the best interest of the team and rightly acted accordingly! Therefore, H. West had no good reason to complain in the way did in their official statement about the cancellation. In fact it was very unfair of the in nit being a little sympathetic to the issues the club was faced with and should have been a little more understanding. If no games take place in the near future then they only have themselves to blame!
