Monk - Jeff Is The Best In The League

Garry Monk must have had a massive smile of satisfaction on his face last weekend when he watched Jefferson Montero tear into Branislav Ivanovic time and time again as the Swans almost caused the opening day shock by coming close to winning at Chelsea.

The performance of the wide man was a vindication for what was a brave selection from Mon where most people expected him to play the more cautious selection of Wayne Routledge.

Montero went around Ivanovic less than ten seconds into the game and that set the tone for the rest of the match as he created the Swans first goal of the season and was a constant threat for the rest of the afternoon.

He was replaced before the end of the game but that was very much a cautionary measure and he is expected to return to the side against Newcastle at the Liberty tomorrow in front of a sell out crowd.

Last week of course was not the first time that Montero has caused havoc in a Premier League game and I don't suspect it will be the last with Monk declaring the Ecuadorian as the best in the Premier League

"Jeff is probably the best in the league in one-on-one situations," said Monk. "I haven't seen anyone create so many opportunities by beating his man.

"What you need with players like that is for them to be protected, because what you'll see is teams start to identify that and try using physical elements to try to disrupt them.

"When that happens hopefully the refs recognise that and deal with it because his percentage of winning his duel with his marker is probably the highest in the league."
