Monk Glad To See Everton Boss Adapt

There would have been a very large dose of a tongue in cheek comment when Garry Monk suggested that it was good to see Everton boss and his former manager Roberto Martinez adapting and following Monks own lead.

When the Swans drew at Everton last season, Roberto was a little bit critical of the way that the Swans set up to try and earn the point but that is something that Monk believes is essential in the modern game.

It is difficult to argue with too many of Monk's methods when you consider the final league position of the team last season and with this season starting just as well then he certainly has methods that many managers can learn from.

“I’ve talked about making the team adaptable,” Monk adds.

“I don’t believe in playing just one way. I don’t believe that’s all you can do as a team. You can have a good belief in one way of playing and that will win you are a fair number of games, but you need to have other ways of winning. That’s what a good team does.

“If you look at other top teams in the world, apart from Barcelona who are unique and their way is the only way, every other top club in adapt in different games.

“Watch the Champions League now and the top European teams are always adapting. Look at Juventus the other night against Manchester City. That’s what top teams and top players should do.

“You have to recognise a strength in your team and what you are building,” he continues.

“I did that last season – I tried to play to the strengths of my players.

“You want your players to be the most effective they can be individually and there are certain ways to play to be able to do that.

“Roberto is doing that more this year and credit to him. He has recognised that and taken it to his team.”
