Martinez Defends Mirallas Red Card

In stoppage time today Everton were reduced to ten men thanks to a reckless challenge from Kevin Mirallas on Modou Barrow, a challenge that was defended by his manager after the game.

Mirallas had only been on the pitch for two minutes when he saw red, the fourth player to be sent off against the Swans in six Premier League games to date.

It was a studs up challenge and after consulting with his linesman referee Stuart Attwell showed him the straight red card that will cost him his place in the Merseyside derby as a result.

But Martinez is likely to appeal after he said at the end of the game that he felt the challenge could have been dealt with common sense as it was a first challenge. Not quite sure what the relevance is or is he trying to claim that you get one free studs up challenge if it is your first one?

Speaking after the game, the former Swans boss said "I always tell my subs to come on and give real intensity, so I was pleased with the manner of Kevin Mirallas arriving on to the pitch.

"I thought it was more a striker trying to defend and putting in a defensive challenge and it looked worse than it actually was.

"I haven't seen in detail but it was his first challenge and sometimes you have to see it with more common sense, I felt he didn't have intention to hurt the Swansea player."
