Whats Do Saints Need To Do This Summer !
Sunday, 16th Jul 2017 09:42 by Arron Sanders

Arron Sanders takes a look at what he believes is needed at Southampton Football Club this Summer.

Summer transfer windows are never dull for Southampton fans, and in the time that lies ahead more and more stories are bound to emerge on the rumoured ins and outs at the club.

Our fans will endlessly debate each other on social media as well as in the stands, and the club’s resolve will continue to be tested over are star names.

Renowned in recent windows as a selling club, Saints appear to want to alter that perception this summer. a new strategic board has been established, and while they have sold in the past there is a sense of strength and belief that the stars can remain at St Mary’s with them all tied down on long term contracts.

A new manager in Maurcio Pellegrino has arrived, and with that hopefully a more exciting brand of football for the fans to watch as it was under the reigns of Ronald Koeman and Mauricio Pochettino.

Holding onto the likes of Van Dijk, Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares is no doubt one of the big priorities for the club, and there is reportedly an agreement with the new boss that nobody will be sold this summer.

Now their are fans out that have already voiced concern that the club is not moving quickly enough in the transfer market, however I would argue that the squad only needs fine tuning with only 3 or 4 signings required.

I would like to see a centre half signed one of first team quality, to replace either Jose Fonte or Martin Carceres the name of Kevin Wimmer from Tottenham Hotspur would be a good fit for this in my opinion.

Another physically strong holding midfield player to challenge Oriol Romeu is also needed, somebody who can effectively break up play and made crucial interceptions is key in any side and Saints lack depth in that area.

A real lightening quick raw winger would be a good addition with the club never really bringing in a like for like replacement for Sadio Mane.

A creative attacking midfield player should also be on the list with Tadic being off the boil last year there needs to be somebody who can in and play the number ten role when his form dips and Sofiane Boufal has yet to truly show his talent in a red and white shirt.

What do you think Saints fans how many signings are required this summer in your opinion? for me it should be more about quality than quantity in this transfer window.

As always with us, it depends who we sell. I think it's inevitable that VVD and Bertrand will go, so they will need replacing.
On top of that we also need more creativity in midfield for the reasons outlined in the article above. I'm also concerned about our strikeforce, seeing as Austin will get injured at some point and Long has never been prolific

I agree with most of that Arron particularly the need for quality. We have plenty of 'nearly men'. Hardly 'fine tuning' though, to bring in a Sigurdsson type alone would cost big money, Are we really going to spend big without selling VVD or Bert? or are we on a promise of transfer funds if this infernal club sale ever goes through? Is that why we're in Limboland on transfers?
Said before, summer's drifting by, potential targets have been lost. They're playing a dangerous game.

If we don't sell anyone I think we still need 3 more good players.
A good striker, A good centre half and a creative attacking midfielder.

With Target and McQueen I can see us not replacing Ryan if he goes, especially as Ryan is worth over £25m and would be tough to find a good replacement, Robertson at Hull is already being linked with Liverpool cutting us out the middle this time round!

Keeping Ryan and Cedric plus signing Sakho and a contract extension for Yoshida would be statement to VVD. If we kept those three then the only reason to add players without moving someone on would be just to shake things up. If we signed another centre mid then Claise surely has to go for his career.

If we keep Sam G rather than loan him out then we are sorted up front as we have Tadic, Boufal, Redmond, Sims, Ward-Prowse, Davis, Long and Gabbi who cal all play behind a central striker in a 4-2-3-1 and Hoijberg could also do a job. Austin, Long, Gallagher and Gabbi all can play up top.

So basically one centre half and then it's a one in one out policy except at LB
