Clement - We Have To Improve

A point at Southampton, on the face of it, is a good result but as you can imagine based on the pattern of play Paul Clement was keen to talk about improvements that his side needed to make after we opened our Premier League campaign with a 0-0 draw.

The result really does not tell the story of a game that saw the home side have 29 attempts at goal but a combination of good defending and wasteful finishing meant that only 2 of those 29 shots were classed as on target.

And when Clement looked back on the game after it had finished he admitted that he was pleased with the defensive display but knows that his team have to get better if they are to take a 7th campaign at this level into an 8th.

"As a coach you reflect on the performance and this performance wasn’t so good" Clement said in his after match interview.

“There were lots of positives, of course, but there are also lots of things we have to work on.

“Southampton are a really good side, but there are some sides we will play this season who are even better than them, so we have to improve.

“On reflection I am happy to be leaving with a point,

“It was a hard afternoon for us. We suffered a lot. There were a lot of shots, a lot of set-plays to defend and Southampton had a lot more of the ball.

“You could say that I must be happy with the defending."
