Beating Southampton in the cup could 'ignite' Pompey's season
Monday, 23rd Sep 2019 21:44 by pompey-fans.com staff

The time has come for the poor start to the League One campaign to be forgotten and for Pompey's players to rise to the big occasion.

That occasion, of course, is a Carabao Cup tie against Southampton under the Fratton Park lights on Tuesday night.

No one in the Blues side understands the Pompey-Southampton rivalry better than Ben Close, coming as he does from the heart of the city, and he knows the players need to deliver.

He told The News they knew they needed to put in a performance - not least for Kenny Jackett, who is under increasing fire for the team's below par start to the league season.

Close said: 'Of course. We’re the 11 players out on the pitch, we’re the ones not getting the results at the moment. Tomorrow night is an opportunity to turn our form and confidence around.

‘We know how the league is going at the moment, but in terms of tomorrow we’re all looking forward to it.

‘It could ignite the season. We need to do that sooner rather than later so maybe this game has come at a good time. But for that to happen we have got to start the game well and do all the things we know we need to do and see where that takes us.’

Pompey are sweating on the fitness of skipper Tom Naylor, who is rated as 50/50 after taking a kick to the calf at Wycombe. Winger Marcus Harness misses out but is expected to be back for Saturday's clash with Bolton.
