Swansea City Ladies ready to attack the new season
Sunday, 27th Sep 2020 09:00 by Keith Haynes

The Swans take on arch rivals Cardiff City later today with the mindset that last season has gone and this season is there to be attacked. New head coach Colin Staples has no doubts at all that the excitement of winning the league title last season has to be repeated.

The game kicks off at 4pm at the Cardiff International Sports Stadium and will be televised LIVE. The first time a women's club match has had top football billing in Wales.

Colin Staples told the club website
“I’m looking forward to the season immensely. In the current environment it is a great opportunity to get out there and do what we do best, which is playing football. For me it’s a bit like that quote from Jurgen Klopp, when he said, ‘we are not here to defend a championship, we are here to attack it. It is my first attempt at winning a league so I am looking forward to learning from the girls’ experience and working with them to defend the title.”

Colin Staples is relishing the new season which starts today

Swans player of fifteen years and club captain, Alicia Powe, is equally as excited and agrees with Staples that this is going to be a monumental game to start the season. “It has been a long time and we are really excited to play again,” she said. Pre-season has gone well, there is a good vibe within the squad. We have a mix of our long-standing players and new signings bringing new talent and energy to the team. It has given us a confidence boost winning the league last season, but we are focused on the new season now and the challenges ahead"

Golden gloves keeper Deanna Lewis is one to watch although Swans fans will be hoping she doesn't have too much to do

Not only will Swansea City Ladies be looking to repeat last seasons success they will also enter the champions league yet again- and will learn their first opponents next month, another incredible milestone for the team that went undefeated last season.
