Newcastle United and Swansea City in for Billy Gilmour
Tuesday, 22nd Jun 2021 10:56 by David Cornish

Scotland’s golden boy, the exciting midfielder Billy Gilmour is set for a loan spell away from Stamford Bridge next season, and several clubs are interested. The main contenders are Newcastle United and Swansea City. Both clubs have loan links with Chelsea from last season, however which is favourite ?

Billy Gilmour has been around for a few years now, He served his early years at Glasgow Rangers and was earmarked for a glittering career by then manager Mark Warburton. Even at the age of sixteen he was grabbing the headlines. At the age of seventeen he signed for Chelsea immediately impressing the coaching staff, and Frank Lampard gave him his Chelsea debut in 2019. Often rumoured to be put out on loan, he nearly left Chelsea in January but manager Thomas Tuchel decided against it. Swansea City were rumoured at the time to be interested. It seems a Tuchel has an admiration for him as a player, and has plans for him in the future.

Chelsea have loaned numerous players to the swans over the years, the latest being the very successful two seasons spent at the club by Marc Guehi. Gilmour would also benefit from a loan at the swans but Newcastle are also in the mix. Joe Willock had a successful loan spell at Newcastle last season, and they will point to that as sufficient for Gilmour to be entrusted for a season long loan in the north east. They are also interested in Tammy Abraham who is pretty much surplus to Chelsea’s requirements. A loan isn’t what they want, and several clubs have inquired about Tammy Abraham, another loanee to the swans. Chelsea want forty million pounds for him, and that has scared away all the clubs who would pay for him.

It could be that Newcastle work out a deal with Chelsea for both players, but they are limited cash wise with Steve Bruce facing an uncertain future. And maybe that’s the key. Steve Cooper is also facing an uncertain future at Swansea City. Chelsea would far prefer Cooper remaining at the club if Gilmour did sign on for a one year loan. His ability and expertise in coaching young players is not in question.

Both the swans and Newcastle have made their interest known to Chelsea, Andy Scott has direct contact with the club, but for such a major move everything has to be perfect. Cooper’s immediate future being in doubt will not help. So, he as much as anyone needs to start the process of either planning for next season, or moving on. At least then clubs dealing with Swansea this summer will know exactly what they are dealing with.

Getting Gilmour would be a massive coup for the swans, he would flourish hugely at the Liberty. A season in the Championship would certainly toughen him up, and allow Chelsea to assess him in a completely different climate. Loaning to a premier league rival is also an issue, and Newcastle could be in a relegation fight next season. Would that be good for Gilmour ?
