Russell Martin hasn’t turned down the Swansea managers job
Friday, 30th Jul 2021 13:55 by David Cornish & Keith Haynes

It’s obviously becoming a bit of a joke for some people, that is Swansea City’s quest for a replacement for Steve Cooper this summer. With a week to run to the first league fixture Swansea City are still to appoint anyone remotely capable of filling his shoes.

However, we do need to look at the facts as they stand. John Eustace is the only person to have turned the job down, that’s a fact. Publicly we know Russell Martin has been approached, or should we say MK Dons, and anyone viewing our well researched story yesterday will know It has only been good information sourcing that has revealed his feelings on the job. If that information in the article is read carefully, it certainly isn’t reported anywhere else. And we corroborated it very quickly yesterday afternoon.

Both Martin and his assistant are concerned about the support they would get should they move to Swansea, and what we do know today is Julian Winter is attempting to convey the clubs position to Martin, albeit via a third party. MK Dons are currently in Hampshire at their training camp before taking on Bournemouth tomorrow in an EFL cup fixture. Russell Martin has been reported as stating no official approach has been made for him, that’s absolute nonsense, but it’s a play on words again, and you have to be very careful. At no point has Russell Martin stated “ Theres been no official approach for me “ What he has said is “If something official ever happened, I'm pretty sure you'd know that pretty quickly”

Obviously you would expect him to say, "As far as I'm concerned we're here and doing a job. A job I really enjoy. After that, I don't know how long the journey with us will last. I'm planning to be here a long time, but in football you never know. At this moment in time, I'm happy and I'm with a group of people I really enjoy doing it with”

In an open ended quote, with no context he said "I think the club would have told you. No one's told me there has been." That final line is the closest he has come to stating he isn’t aware of any approach, so, anyone reporting he has turned Swansea down is way past the mark. If you haven’t been officially approached you can’t turn anything down. And that quote in isolation as it has been reported means nothing, it isn’t in response to anything concrete. The press are playing games. All we have had confirmed, and let’s be honest if you do read the article from yesterday you will see, is there is a concern over support for them if they came. That’s a fact. Look where it came from.

So, Russell Martin is still very much in the frame, Peter Winkleman is very quiet on everything, that’s a clue, there’s no doubt he has spoken to Swansea, but be aware of the term “Official” that’s the key.

Nothing from MK Dons at all

The quietest of candidates is Jody Morris who we believe today is being spoken to in a far more official capacity than he has been before. The man with no compensation fee and a vast amount of more experience than Russell Martin is far less a gamble than the MK Dons man. His contacts alone will give the swans a huge boost. They remain the two candidates. However, if Morris agrees and the swans agree too with what he wants as manger of the club he should get the job in the very near future. All eyes on the west stand tomorrow. Not a bad time to unveil any new manager of the club too.

We are not going to reference Chris Wilder, just be aware he was on a basic eighteen thousand pounds a week salary last season at Sheffield United. Alan Knill on half that. And that’s basic. It may well be he is a suitable candidate, but there’s literally nothing to him being favourite in this race for the Swansea job. We are certain many people would be delighted if he got the job, he would have to take a huge drop in expected pay, and for us he isn’t right for Swansea. Not one bit. It would end in tears, we are sure of that.

You sound so incredibly confident that he hasn't turned us down, but he has. I know this for an absolute fact as I was standing next to someone (one of his closest mates) who was on the phone with him yesterday after we had discussed the odds on him joining us.
Reading between the lines and correcting others is fine, but this comes across as a "look how clever we are" or "we are so well connected" but the FACT is that he's unfortunately not interested in joining us.
