Swans attempting to secure £4,000 a week defender on season loan
Wednesday, 4th Aug 2021 13:50 by David Cornish

19 year old Ethan Laird who spent last season at MK Dons with Russell Martin and his team at Stadium MK is keen to link up with him again after a successful loan spell last time around. Signing for MK Dons in January he played 24 games and was a huge success at the club. Manchester United see him as a definite star for the future.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a huge admirer of Laird, so much so he won’t be happy to see him leave for Swansea until he has some form of confirmation that he has another right back coming in to Old Trafford. Kieran Trippier is favourite to be that player from Atletico Madrid. If that deal transpires or looks close then Laird will be released to join Swansea City for the rest of the season.

Martin is keen to get the deal done as Laird is best utilised at right wing back, and with wing backs he gained the most success last season at MK Dons. Obviously with Connor Roberts currently out for at least the next seven weeks, and Kyle Naughton the only real suitable replacement, Laird will be seen as key to the swans early season plans. There will always be a few raised eyebrows at such a young player, who celebrates his birthday tomorrow, being included in such a competitive league, and definitely in the toughest competition he will have experienced in his short career.

If Ethan Laird is fit, and that’s another issue, he hasn’t trained that much in the close season. He received a bad injury against Rochdale at the end of last season, then swans fans can expect the first touches to the new Swansea era with Russell Martin. We understand he would have failed a medical last week but this week there are more promising signs of his recovery. It’s not ideal, but if he is considered that much of an asset then his current injury shouldn’t cause too much concern. We hope.

Should the swans be signing such young players for this seasons promotion push ?
