Jay Fulton is ‘delighted’ with new club progress as his Swansea City career seems over
Wednesday, 29th Dec 2021 08:00 by Keith Haynes

Many Swansea City supporters won’t want to hear this mornings news that Jay Fulton has ‘seemingly’ found himself a new club. Having been very much in the shadows at the swans this season, and only playing a handful of games Fulton just hasn’t made his mark under Russell Martin.

Once first choice for many on any swans team sheet, the aggressive and hard tackling defensive midfielder just hasn’t managed to make an impact on the first eleven at Swansea City in the 21/22 season. So much so both Fulton and Martin agreed early on that he should be able to prospect a new club to move to in January. The swans are prepared to let him go on a ‘cut price’ deal to free up his salary, plus put some money in to the coffers for new signings next month.

Since Martin arrived at Swansea he has carefully planned his ideal strategy utilising the players he has. A few of those players either didn’t want to be involved in Martin’s vision or just plain refused to listen to the way he develops and trains players. Sitting down with his staff and players regularly on ‘one to one chats ‘ exploring their emotional investment in themselves and the club, Martin has evaluated that Jay Fulton isn’t the right man to be in this particular group. That has been evident all season.

What we do know is that Jay Fulton also didn’t see himself as a part of the new Swansea City journey, and the way that Russell Martin trains. His ethos is very different. There have been other issues, but they are not for this website. Basically Jay Fulton and Russell Martin agreed he was to move on if possible. The non meeting of minds came about around the same time as Alan Tate was finding it difficult to understand and implement Martin’s way of developing players on and off the pitch. Tate moved on to join up with Steve Cooper at Nottingham Forest in what seemed to be quite a manufactured public outing of Tate’s leaving. This we know didn’t go down well with a few of the older squad players.

It wouldn’t surprise us if he appeared in a cup tie whilst he is still at the club but as we have stated in the league it’s pretty much a done thing. News reached us yesterday that Jay is now ‘delighted’ with the progress his representatives have made in securing a new club for him, with two now understood to be interested in finalising terms. The only issue for him is the swans want hard cash, albeit drastically reduced to cover their own outgoings. And we understand that one of the clubs is ready to make an offer far below his market value, the other wants a loan deal until the summer with an option to buy.

And neither club is called Nottingham Forest who had no choice but to play down their interest in Fulton two weeks ago to avoid a bidding war for the player. Steve Cooper obviously still admired the player when he tactfully stated ‘ He would say nothing publicly about Fulton not playing for Swansea’ There was enough there alone for Martin to digest.

Martin recently stated. “ For players in particular who are not playing so much who probably accept their future lies elsewhere, it becomes a long tough month. ( December) They want it sorted, they can get anxious and feel a bit uncertain about what's going on. We just need to get through this month as best as we can, we'll have loads of conversations with everyone. We're really clear with the players who are potentially leaving, they understand their situations and they have done for a while so that makes it easier. There's no pretence or being false with anyone."

Anybody in any doubt would have known then Fulton’s time at Swansea was over.

Jay Fulton could have commanded at least two million pounds at the height of his Swansea career. Nowadays a good offer would be five hundred thousand, and let’s be honest his playing time has been so drastically reduced by Martin three hundred thousand would see him gone. It isn’t a surprise Jay Fulton is on his way, the figures being talked about are low, but as we have said why keep a player in reserve whilst his value drops ? It makes no sense.

And let’s not forget or rule out Nottingham Forest. Cooper is a huge fan of ‘Selfless’ Fulton stating “ I can't tell you how professional he is. He's the ultimate team player or squad member if you like. He's always puts everything else before him, a selfless individual. Swansea is very important to him. His wife has just given birth to a second child and they're going to grow up here, and that's important when you're a family man as he is”

And here we are not even a year later and that player is as near as gone from the club. This is one of the January transfers which could come back and bite Russell Martin, Fulton is a class professional and a well respected player amongst his peers. He has settled in Swansea and has a contract until 2024, and a young family. None of this will have done him any good and we are sure to hear from him when he eventually does leave the shores of Swansea. For us here it’s a very sad day, he was one of the better midfielders the club has developed over the years, but at twenty seven he has to look after himself. And it looks very much like he has done so.

What are your thoughts on Jay Fulton leaving the swans ?
